After his retirement, he was recruited by Stern Pinball to design several games for them in the popular pinball era of the early 1980's. Harry's designs were always known for their fast, action-packed play, and touted for the unique things Harry would do with the ball- most of his games featured a unique layout or mechanical device in their design. Game Description:
Cheetah is a classic style pinball game made by Stern in the extremely popular pinball era of the early 1980's. This game is a "widebody" model, which features an extra-wide playfield layout (about 3-1/2 inches wider than standard pinball games) and accomodates several more pinball "gadgets" on the playfield. Widebody games were introduced in 1978 by the bigger pinball manufacturers to offer more "pinball for the money" to players, and help justify the transition from 25¢ to 50¢ play which took place at the end of 1980.
Cheetah features three flippers- two at the lower "standard" position, and one midway up the left side of the playfield which allows the ball- coming down from the pop bumpers area- to be shot at drop targets and around a "horseshoe" shaped loop in te upper right corner of the playfield. This game also features three lively pop bumpers, three separate spinning targets, and a lot of drop targets- four separate banks of drop targets adorn the playfield on this game. Double flipper return lanes flank the lower section of the playfield, saving balls about 33% more than standard pinball games- which typically gives longer play time.
Cheetah also has a "timed" shot- a unique feature not found on most games. Try to time your shots at the center right bank of drop targets to drop each one when the lights in front of it are lined up- and grab some extra bonus points!
The center left drop target bank is a sequential bank- numbered 1 through 5. Targets have to be knocked down in order- from 1 to 5- to complete the bank. Each completion of the bank gives a greater award- starting with "20,000 and light collect bonus lane" to "50,000 and light special". The second completion award is rather unique on this game- it will award "maximum bonus", which advances the bonus lights in the center of the playfield to maximum value- 100,000 on this game!
Cheetah features 7-digit scoring, and up to 4 players can play together.
Game Condition Details:
This game is in overall great shape, especially for an older classic "vintage" game from the 1980's- most games from this era honestly do not survive as well as this one has. There are some signs of past use and normal "wear and tear" on the game, but overall it is in good health, especially in regard to the mechanical and electronic parts inside it- all are in great condition and have been fully inspected and gone-through to ensure proper operation and maximum reliability. We rate this game somewhere between our Excellent and Very Good ratings.
Cabinet on this game is in overall very good condition. A few nicks and scrapes are present on the exterior surfaces from normal handling/use over the past years, but no major or unsightly damage present.
Playfield is in excellent condition and still has a great finish to it. A few minor wear spots are present around a few of the light "insert" lenses here and there on the playfield, but again, no major or unsightly defects. Playfield has been cleaned and polished as part of the shop-out process. Any burned out light bulbs have been replaced and new rubber rings and bumpers have been installed throughout the playfield. New decals have also been installed on all three spinners, and on the two center drop target banks. The two center drop target banks have also had all of their plastic drop targets replaced with new ones for extra long life.
Backglass/Translite: Backglass on this game is in excellent condition and looks fantastic. Really far above average condition for an older vintage game like this one. It has a few very small scratches in a few spots on the back, but nothing major, and no signs of any flaking or lifting of the ink from the glass (very common on older games). This glass has really been preserved well.
Score displays are all in excellent condition and have all been overhauled to ensure good reliable operation for years to come.
All circuit boards in the backbox are in excellent condition with no signs of previous bad repair work or any other flaws. All are fully tested and in full working order. All boards were removed during the game's shop-out process and were all overhauled and upgraded where necessary, including a new remote-mount battery backup kit for the MPU board, reflowing of solder on the backs of connector pins to eliminate hairline stress cracks and add reliability, and new parts and upgrades installed on the solenoid driver/power regulator board for added reliability and performance. All connector pins on the boards in backbox had DeoxIt deoxidizing compound added to them for ease of removal/installation and to ensure good reliable connections (one of the most common sources of problems in older games). Fuse/rectifier board in main cabinet has been fully rebuilt with all new connector pins, rectifiers, fuses, and more.
Coin door on this game is in great shape and functional with no major defects or problems. Game can be run on coins if so desired, but we have set this game up on "free play" so that no coins are required for operation.
Here is a detailed list of work that has been done on this game, followed by more details on parts and game modifications:
- We have logged approximately 12 hours in the shopping-out of this game.
- Playfield top surface cleaned/polished in all major areas.
- New rubber ring kit installed on playfield.
- Fuse/rectifier board in main cabinet fully rebuilt and rewired for added reliability, including all new connector pins, connector housings, new heavy-duty rectifiers, fuse clips, fuses, and power resistor.

Playfield:

 | Playfield- overall, finished view. |
 | Detail- lower playfield- flippers area. Playfield is in overall great shape for an older vintage game, but does have a few spots around some light "insert" lenses where some of the paint has worn away a bit from normal use over the years. Overall still a very bright vibrant look to the playfield. |
 | Detail- left side of playfield. Left upper flipper and 5-bank targets visible here. All targets in the 5-bank have been replaced with new targets, including new decals. Note new spinner decals on the left spinner as well.
Pop bumpers have been adjusted and are now very energetic and lively- lots of action on these on this game. |
 | Detail- upper right corner view of playfield. Right center 3-bank drop targets have also been replaced with new targets, and new decals. New spinner decals applied to middle and right spinners, also visible here.
We custom-made and installed a new lexan clear plastic that goes on the bottom of the "horseshoe" loop behind the 3-bank targets as the original plastic was cracked and broken in a few spots from wear/tear in past years. One crack in the upper plastic behind the horseshoe loop had been repaired by a previous owner. All other plastics are in great shape with no cracks or breaks. |
Cabinet/Backbox:
Thumbnail (Click for larger view) | Description |
 | Overall view. |
 | Left side of main cabinet. A few nicks and scrapes are present on this, and other exterior surfaces of the game, from normal use/handling in past years. No major damage is present, and cabinet has an overall "slightly above average" appearance to it for a game of it's age/vintage.
Legs have a bit of dust and some nicks/scratches on them from average use over the years. In fair condition and they do the job well, but a new owner may want to repaint or replace the legs, and install new leg levelers, if so desired. |
 | Right side of main cabinet. |
 | Left side of backbox and backglass front.
Backglass on this game is in superior condition- near mint. Extremely well preserved for a game of it's era. Only a few small scratches are present from handling on the back side (see image below), but no lifting or flaking of ink, and colors are all still bright and vibrant with no signs of fading. Very well preserved. |
 | Backbox right side. |
 | Backglass- rear side. Very well preserved on this game with none of the tell-tale lifting, cracking, or flaking of ink that is commonplace on most older vintage games. This one has been remarably well-preserved. Only a few tiny scratches are present in some small spots from normal handling over the years. Extremely nice glass on this game. |
 | Main cabinet front, coin door. A few nicks/scratches from normal use are present here as well. Coin door assembly is in good condition and has all wiring, switches, etc. Only one coin mechanism is included (right slot)- other 2 are missing. Additional coin mechanisms can be installed for additional cost, if buyer wishes to operate the game on coins. Otherwise, it is currently set up for "free play" configuration, and no coins are needed. |
 | Backbox interior. All boards are in great condition and clean- no battery leakage damage on the MPU board. And no signs of any past poor repair work. All circuit boards and displays have been gone through and upgraded for added reliability and long life.
Note remote-mount battery backup kit for MPU board. This gets the three "AA" batteries off the valuable MPU board, and relocates them "off-board", and prevents potential damage to the MPU board, should the batteries ever be neglected to the point where they burst and leak (common problem in all pinball machines from 1977 to present). Quick-disconnect connector allows battery pack to be disconnected, should MPU board ever need to be removed from the game.
We also include two battery "tags" inside the main cabinet, and in backbox (shown in image at left) which indicate the last date that the batteries were changed, and how/when to change them in the future. |
 | Main cabinet interior. Cabinet is reasonably clean (vacuumed out) and in good shape. Fuse/rectifier board has been fully rebuilt with all new parts and upgraded components for added reliability and long life. |
Game includes full game manual and schematics (wiring diagrams).
