Doctor Who is based on the hit British science fiction TV series. Choose one of the seven original "Doctors" from the series to start your play. Each Doctor features an area on the playfield that must be completed, and the selected Doctor "area" will be lit for higher points. Try to complete all the areas to collect all seven Doctors!

This game features three pop bumpers in the upper right corner that are reached by sending the ball up the left orbit shot- around the top center of the playfield. Pop bumpers build the "Transmat" power. Hit the "Activate Transmat" target to light extra Doctors during play.

A unique "mini" playfield is housed at the top center of the playfield. This playfield is motorized and raises up and down during play. It features three separate levels that must be completed for Multiball mode. Shoot the center target on the main level ("Time Expander") to light the two saucers on that level for ball lock. Lock two balls and the playfield raises up to the second level.

Complete the 5 targets on the second level- three times each- to light up the control panel. The playfield raises again to show three "Dalek" targets that must be hit. The Dalek targets are "fly away" targets that, when hit, fly up and stay in the up position. Shoot all three to complete.

Three flippers are featured on this game. The top flipper (left side) enables shots to the upper "Cliffhanger" ramp. Shoot the Cliffhanger ramp to increase bonus multipliers, and increase ALL scores on the playfield!

This game also features a unique "video mode" where the player plays a video game- of sorts- on the score display during regular play. Complete the "ESCAPE" targets to light the Video Mode, then collect it by shooting the pop bumpers, and draining the ball down to the Tardis kickout. In video mode, you are the "Doctor" and you must jump over obstacles as you run- use one flipper button to jump small obstacles, and two to jump large obstacles. Can you make it all the way?

Doctor Who is a game that is often touted as "more than meets the eye". Many hard-core players are drawn to this game, based on it's excellent design in ruleset and strategy. Enough to really challenge the best of players, but still straightforward enough, and fun, for novice and "newbie" players alike.

Game Condition:

Playfield: Playfield on this game is in fantastic shape overall and appears very "above average" for a game of this era- with very few- if any- signs of wear/use from play over the years. No "worn spots" where paint has been worn away by play- very nicely preserved example of this game. Playfield has been stripped, cleaned, polished, and waxed to restore original look and give maximum playability and appearance. "Mini" playfield also received an overhaul all it's own where it was completely removed from the game during the restoration and disassembled into every possible part- all mechanisms and parts being fully cleaned and rebuilt during restoration. Along with the rest of our standard
playfield restoration processes we have also refinished all of the stainless steel ball rail guides so they have no "ball marks" and give a brand new appearance.

Cabinet & Backbox: Cabinet/backbox are in great shape having had only a few small nicks and scratches from normal use and handling over the years, most of which have been touched-up to be less apparent. Most of these were around the edges on the backbox, and a few small light scratches on the main cabinet sides. Very little if any fading of the cabinet artwork on this game- game still has an overall bright colorful appearance from top to bottom, and appears very fresh-looking. Small nicks and scratches have been touched up to match the finish here and there, but no unsightly blemishes are present on this game.

Coin door is in excellent condition and has been thoroughly overhauled and restored- disassembled into all individual pieces and parts. Metal parts and carriage bolts used for mounting have been repainted with correct semi-gloss black enamel paint. All internal parts have been cleaned and reassembled, including wiring harness and buttons/switches. Coin mechanisms in this game were missing when we acquired the game but we have installed three brand new 25¢ mechanisms to make the door complete and functional. New coin door lock and key installed. Looks and works like new- inside and out. Coin door on this game is a three-chute door (currently set up for US quarters in each slot) but game is actually a domestic (U.S.) model and not a re-imported game from Europe which more commonly uses the 3-chute door.

Backglass/Translite: Backglass mylar translite is in great shape- original for this game. No noticeable or obvious flaws when viewed from the front. One small superficial scratch is present on the back side from normal handling over the years but does not penetrate the artwork or appear obvious from the front side. Very well preserved. Backglass glass and translite, along with edge molding pieces, have all been removed and fully cleaned- front and back sides- for new, clean appearance. Speaker panel plexiglass cover is in great shape on the game with no apparent damage or blemishes- very nice piece.

Here is a detailed list of work that has been done on this game, followed by more details on condition:
  • We have invested 45 hours in the detailed restoration of this game.
  • Playfield top and bottom surfaces stripped of parts and assemblies for proper cleaning- right down to the bare wood and paint. Playfield surface hand cleaned, hand polished, and hand waxed with top-quality Carnauba wax.
  • All playfield parts have been removed and hand cleaned, or replaced with brand new parts where necessary. This includes light bulbs, posts, ramps, wireform ball guides, flipper assemblies, under-playfield ramps, target banks, bumper assemblies, lamp PC boards, ball trough and associated parts, and any other parts that are installed on the playfield.
  • All metal parts removed from playfield have been hand cleaned and polished for original bright shiny finish.
  • Stainless steel ball guides refinished using our own in-house proprietary process. This removes the ugly "ball marks" from the stainless steel "rails" or "guides" that are found all over the playfield and on sides of lanes. Our process removes the marks and leaves a "like new" finish and look on these rails to restore their "day one" new look.
  • All ramps have been completely removed and fully disassembled into all of their individual parts, including having wiring harnesses and switches/plugs removed for proper cleaning. Ramps cleaned, polished, and all associated hardware and accessory parts cleaned, polished, and reassembled.
  • Under-playfield plastic ramp removed and fully disassembled and cleaned just like ramps on top of playfield.
  • All pop bumper assemblies on this game were removed, 100% disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled. Any worn or broken parts replaced with brand new parts.
  • All flipper assemblies completely removed, 100% disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt with brand new factory-original parts, and reassembled. Flippers tuned and adjusted.
  • Brand new flipper coils installed on all 3 flippers on this game.
  • Brand new yellow flipper bats installed for all 3 flippers.
  • Brand new Rubber Ring Kit installed on playfield.
  • All light bulbs on top and bottom of playfield, and elsewhere in game, removed, cleaned, and replaced. Brand new light bulbs used as replacements for old worn, discolored, or burned out bulbs and flasher bulbs.
  • All light bulb inserts (or "lenses") in playfield surface cleaned and polished for maximum shine and light penetration.
  • Brand new chrome steel pinballs installed in game (game uses THREE total).
  • Playfield flat plastics (screened artwork) all removed, cleaned, polished, and replaced.
  • Fender washers installed under top and bottom edges of slingshot bumper plastics to protect them from cracking/breaking from airborne balls.
  • Standup targets on playfield have been removed from game and fully cleaned- front and back- and replaced.
  • Score and instruction cards have both been reproduced for clean clear looks, and hard-laminated for durability, and to prevent against damage in the future- these look great!
  • Technical info chart in main cabinet has been removed, and replaced with new chart, fully hard-laminated for durability and to protect against damage in the future (original chart was simply a plain piece of paper- new chart is hard-laminated and won't tear, discolor, or stain).
  • Both slingshot bumper assemblies have had their detector switches removed and hand-cleaned with tarnish remover to restore finish.
  • Inside and outside of main cabinet and backbox completely stripped of parts, cleaned, parts individually hand cleaned, and reassembled.
  • Coin door completely removed and 100% disassembled. All parts (including wiring harness and switches) individually cleaned and detailed by hand and reassembled. Coin door metal parts professionally repainted and refinished for that brand new "day one" look!
  • Brand new quarter coin mechanisms installed in coin door and tested for proper operation/adjustment.
  • Playfield glass lockdown bar removed, cleaned, and reassembled. Brand new strip of insulating foam rubber applied to underside of lockdown bar.
  • All four legs have been removed, cleaned, and shined-up to restore original look.
  • Brand new leg levelers and nuts installed on all four legs.
  • Brand new leg bolts installed.
  • Brand new cabinet leg protector pads installed under legs for added good looks and protection against wear/tear to the cabinet corners.
  • Solder joints on light bulb and motor-control PC boards under playfield all reflowed and reinforced with fresh solder to prevent cracks and intermittent operation in the future.
  • All electronics (PC boards) in backbox checked and tested for proper operation and good looks (no burned connectors, etc.) Fuses all removed, checked, and proper values verified- replaced where necessary.
  • Remote-mount battery holder installed for MPU board in backbox. This prevents damage to the valuable MPU board from accidental battery discharge or leakage, which can destroy the board. Batteries are now mounted off-board and risk of damage is eliminated. Brand new fresh batteries installed.
  • Playfield glass replaced with brand new scratch-free sheet of tempered safety glass.
  • Backglass translite (artwork) removed and glass cleaned/polished (both sides). Translite cleaned/polished (both sides). All lamps cleaned or replaced. Molding pieces cleaned and reassembled.
  • Mini playfield assembly on main playfield fully removed and broken down in to each individual component and cleaned, refurbished, rebuilt, and reinstalled 100% (approximately 5 hours work).
  • Heavy gauge wiring added to kickout saucer coils on mini playfield, and vertical up-kicker in Tardis assembly to prevent problems from broken wires (common issue in this game and on these particular devices).
  • Cabinet nicks and scratches touched up, and repainted, where necessary.
  • New white nylon gliders installed on back of main cabinet, and under side edges on backbox, for fresh new look.
  • New nuts and screws added to playfield posts for fresh "day one" look. Including new nylock nuts on plastics and hex head screws on posts.
  • Metal posts polished/shined including hex posts and standoff posts used throughout playfield.
  • New stainless steel "Cliffy" protector installed for mini-playfield front edge. This prevents damage to the front wood edge of the mini playfield and makes for a much better, cleaner look.
  • New springsteel protective flap on front top edge of mini playfield for added protection and great looks.
  • New coin box and metal lid in main cabinet.
  • Back of main cabinet repainted in semi-gloss black to restore original factory finish.
  • Main cabinet interior walls repainted in semi-gloss black to restore original factory finish.
  • New white nylon gliders installed on back "skids" on main cabinet, and on undersides of backbox edges to restore original factory look and functionality.

Description
Playfield- overall view. Restoration complete and fully reassembled.
Playfield during restoration. Here's a shot you rarely see- most dealers don't strip a playfield down completely to properly overhaul the game, but it's the only way to get it right and make it look and work like new again. A lot of work, but always worth the effort- that's what keeps us going! Here's the playfield stripped to the bare wood and paint. A few parts being added back on at this stage. Still several full days of hard work to go!
Lower playfield- flippers and slingshot bumpers area- restoration complete.
Detail- main playfield, left side. Shot looking up the "Hang On" lane. Left upper flipper and left ramp also visible here.
Detail- right side of main playfield. The "Tardis" Police Box is visible here- where ball enters into play. Also the E-S-C-A-P-E target bank and entrance to both the left (upper) and right (lower) ramps.
Shot of ramp entrances and upper pop bupmer area in upper left corner of playfield.
Shot of the elevating "mini" playfield at top center of playfield. This is in the fully raised position- showing all 3 levels on the mini playfield. Lock balls in the top level, then hit the gray round targets on the second level, then shoot through the Daleks on the lower level to complete!

Note the brand new custom stainless steel "Cliffy" protector added to the front edge of the mini playfield. This prevents unnecessary wear/damage to the front wooden edge of the playfield and looks fantastic as well!
Playfield underside. Note all of the fully cleaned under-playfield surface, including all of the rebuilt assemblies such as flippers, slingshot bumpers, pop bumpers, up-kickers, lamp PC boards, lamps and sockets, ball trough, and more. Note brand new flipper mechanical parts installed including coils. All PC boards seen here (feature lamps and motor controls) have been fully cleaned and have even had new solder re-flowed on connector pins to prevent cracks and intermittent operation from vibration, which is common in average un-restored games.

Even the under-playfield ramp on this game was overhauled. Most pinball dealers won't bother to clean anything under the playfield- especially ramps- but they are critical to keeping your game clean. If an under-playfield ramp is left dirty, that dirt soon finds its way back up on to the playfield- tracked there by balls- and makes any prior playfield cleaning a waste of time. Clean everything or don't do it at all! Anything short of this just doesn't cut it!
You know it's been done right when it's been stripped down this far! This is the first piece that gets put together when the elevating mini-playfield is assembled for this game. All parts on this unit were removed- every individual nut and screw- and everything fully cleaned, overhauled, rebuilt, and upgraded where necessary. Over 5 hours of hard labor went into the reconditioning of just the mini playfield assembly alone in this game- that's a thorough overhaul!

Cabinet/Backbox:

Description
Game overall view.
Cabinet- right side. The whole cabinet on this game shows below-average signs of use/handling- very few nicks/scratches have been present on any of the cabinet surfaces, and most were touched-up to be less apparent and restore the smooth clean look to the game (most being around the edges on backbox). Really nice to see a used game in this good of shape after so many years.
Cabinet- left side. Brand new leg levelers and leg bolts were installed on this game including a set of new black cabinet leg protector pads to help prevent any wear/tear on the game in the future. Really a sharp-looking game after the extra work invested here.
Cabinet front and coin door. Coin door has been completely removed and stripped down into every individual nut, screw, and bracket. Metal parts have been repainted in original semi-gloss black enamel. All parts cleaned and restored and door fully reassembled. New lock/key and 25¢ coin mechanisms have been installed to complete the door. Game can also be used on "free play" without coins.

Coin door on this game is a three-chute door (currently set up for US quarters in each slot) but game is actually a domestic (U.S.) model and not a re-imported game from Europe which more commonly uses the 3-chute door.
Coin door interior. Note fully restored coin door and new coin mechanism installed. Also NOS coin box and metal lid.
Backbox right and front sides. Note original "Dalek" topper and clear plastic cover are still present on this game and in very good shape. Dalek lights up and flashes during play. Clear protective cover is intact but has a few small superficial scuffs on top front corner from normal use/handling over the years- these do not detract from overall look.
Backbox left side.
Cabinet interior. Interior has been stripped of all parts and everything cleaned. All parts cleaned and re-installed. New coin box and lid included (not shown in this pic). Sides of cabinet walls have been repainted with new coat of semi-gloss black paint- just like original factory process.

Like all pinballs we sell, this machine also comes complete with instruction/operation manual and schematics, and fully functional coin door with all parts present and working. For our local customers, this game also includes
delivery, setup, and a full 30-day warranty on parts and labor, at no additional charge. For out-of-town customers, we offer our 30-day Limited Warranty.

For more details on our work on this particular game, see our restoration information page.
