Interested Buyers Please Note:
Thank you for your interest in this classic and professionally restored pinball game. Even if you are "just looking" and not necessarily in the market for a game such as this, we appreciate your stopping by for a look! We hope you enjoy what you see here!
As is common on higher-end games and restorations such as this one, we typically get a tremendous amount of interest and questions from our customers on fine details about game condition- amid many other general inquiries. Interested buyers are respectfully reminded that this game is, and always will be, a used pinball game, going on about 27 years of age at this point, and while it does look and play fantastically in every way, it is in no way a brand new unused machine and may not necessarily exhibit all of the inherent characteristics commonly found in a brand new unused machine- cosmetically, mechanically, or electronically. Just like a classic antique car may be restored to "like new condition", it will never ever again be "brand new". The same truths apply to a restored pinball machine as well.
If you are looking for "absolute mint condition", "microscopic perfection", quality that rivals NASA or Military specifications, or basically something that is 100% flawless and never had any use or wear/tear of any kind, we kindly invite you to peruse the selection of brand new pinball machines for sale that we have listed on our website.
While this game has been extensively restored and reconditioned to not only look and play like new, but to be as reliable as possible in it's use, it is a known fact that all pinball machines- old or new- will require some adjustment, maintenance, service, and repair as time goes on. There simply is no such thing as a "zero maintenance" pinball machine- anywhere. And vintage pinball games such as this one that not only have many moving parts, but also have the inherent aspect of older age on their side, may tend to require a bit more upkeep in their day-to-day operation simply due to their age and previous use. This game is offered for sale under these conditions and based on these considerations.
We ask any interested buyers to please carefully consider the aspects and responsibility of owning and maintaining a used, restored pinball game, understanding that occasional repairs, adjustments, maintenance, and service will more-or-less be an integral part of owning and using a vintage game such as this one, as time goes on.
Repairs and adjustments of this type are not covered under warranty for non-local customers (customers outside the local Salt Lake City, Utah, area), so any such interested customers are advised to take the above information into consideration before making a decision to purchase or not to purchase this game. If you need any further information, please e-mail us. Thank You! - Action Pinball & Amusement Management & Staff

Game Description:
was produced in early 1980 during the height of one of arcade pinball's most popular eras. Like most games created by Williams' designer Steve Ritchie Firepower was ahead of it's time- pushing the boundaries and limits of the available technology at that time. Williams, along with Ritchie, created some of the top titles in pinball history, including Firepower, Black Knight, Flash, Stellar Wars, and many others.
Firepower was popular with arcade players right from it's introduction in early 1980 and broke/held many records for popularity and arcade earnings throughout the 1980's. Players could not get enough of this high energy pinball and it was common in the arcades to see quarters stacked up on the glass to ensure uninterrupted play. Firepower was the first and only pinball machine of the 1980's which was operated at 50¢ play (3 balls) with no complaints from players. Many weekly arcade collections reached over $500 and averaged just over half that amount. Firepower even recruited many video game players due to the crowds that often surrounded the game on location. Only Black Knight- released later in 1980- could topple Firepower from it's popular position as #1 in the arcades, but Firepower continued to draw loyal players for years to follow. The game is now considered a landmark in pinball history and holds a respected place in the collections and gamerooms of collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Firepower's legend was in establishing itself as the first solid-state (electronic) pinball to offer Multiball™ play. Multiball™ was a feature where the player could play 1, 2, or 3 balls at a single time, depending on the mode that was completed, or accomplished, during play. Multiball play was found on some earlier electro-mechanical pinball games- especially those made by Bally- such as Four Million B.C. and Fireball in 1972. But Firepower brought Multiball™ into the modern electronic age, and there it stayed. Other Multiball™ games that soon followed were Black Knight, Scorpion, Pharaoh, and many others as time moved forward into the 1980's. Today, Multiball™ is a common pinball feature which all new games have. A pinball without Multiball™ play today would be considered very unusual.
The main object of Firepower is to achieve Multiball™ play. This is done by completing the target banks in the center of the play to light "locks" on each of the three ball saucers on the playfield. Shooting a ball into a lit saucer "locks" the ball, and the ball is kept, and another ball is served into the plunger lane to be shot into play.
After 3 balls have been successfully locked, the game does a cool "countdown" mode, and all balls are released from their saucers, and the player enjoys simultaneous 3-ball Multiball™ play. When 2 of the 3 balls are lost from play, normal "single ball" play resumes, and the player can again work toward lighting "locks" and accomplishing Multiball™ again.
Scoring is always higher in Multiball™ mode, since two or three times the usual number of balls are in play. In most modern games, it is common to have a "jackpot" shot that the player has to make during Multiball, to collect a very large bonus or other award. But in early Multiball™ games, Multiball™ play itself was the award (along with inherent increased scoring). Players had seldom, if ever, experienced Multiball™ play on a pinball game before, so in 1980 when Firepower was released, this was the hot new pinball benchmark!
Firepower was also one of several "talking" pinball games produced by Williams, the first of which was Gorgar produced one year earlier. Complete the top F-I-R-E lanes and hear the game say "FIRE!" Complete the right 3-bank standup targets and hear "POWER!" Complete multiball to hear "Misson accomplished!" and "Enemy destroyed!" among several other well-integrated and exciting speech clips.
Completing the F-I-R-E lanes increases bonus multipliers and lights extra ball. Completing the POWER targets lights pop bumpers for higher points, and spinner for higher value.
Firepower is probably the one solid-state pinball made by Williams that can be credited with having the best computer-generated sound effects during play. It has one of the best background sounds during play and many fast-paced, exciting effects to go with target strikes and other game play events- definitely a landmark game in accomplishments with pinball sound and considered by many to be well ahead of it's time.
Firepower also features several long, sweeping shots on the playfield- typical of designer Steve Ritchie's more popular layouts. Play seems to naturally "flow" on this playfield- whether you're shooting to lock balls, completing targets to light locks, or going for the top lanes to complete F-I-R-E and increase bonus multipliers. A "kickback" unit in the left outlane sends the ball back into play when lit. Complete either center target bank to re-light the kickback. Firepower features Lane Change™, which uses the right flipper button to rotate the lights of the top rollover lanes, making it easier to complete them during play. Lane Change™ became a standard on pinball games in later years and is considered a commonplace feature on all new pinball games today.
Recently returned to "like-new" condition, this game plays lightning-fast with strong, crisp flipper shots and fast bumper and ball action- everywhere on the playfield. Switches and bumpers are extremely responsive- after only one game on this machine you'll think you were back at the arcade in 1980 playing a brand new pinball again! There is no greater experience in pinball than playing a top-condition, exciting, fast-paced game like this one, and after a few plays on this vintage classic, we're sure you'll agree!

Overall:
Over 140 hours have been invested in the excruciating detailed restoration of this legendary classic Williams pinball game. It easily meets our criteria for a "Collector Condition" rating, which is our top rating for a used, reconditioned, restored game.
This particular game was acquired from a rural operator who typically had games that stayed in one or two locations during their lives, and were rarely moved, and consequently got limited play. This game had been stored and neglected for many years after being taken off-route, and having been in a non-climate-controlled area, the cabinet and backglass suffered from time and the elements, but playfield and electronic/mechanical parts remained well-preserved, especially due to the game's limited use in operation. The cleanliness of the game- inside and out- and the obvious signs of very limited use on the playfield and it's components had convinced us that this was truly a low-mileage game to begin with, so with it's parts and components in prime condition, was the best candidate for a high-end restoration of this caliber.
Cabinet and Backbox on this game (entire cabinet) have been fully repainted from top to bottom in original factory paint colors and style with original factory design faithfully reproduced. The whole cabinet has a fresh, brand-new appearance, and has a very smooth finish. All signs of use on this game over the years have been erased from this cabinet with the repaint work so the entire cabinet- inside and out- is essentially again in "brand new" condition- absolutely gorgeous. Brand new white nylon gliders have been installed in original locations on the back of the main cabinet, and on the underside corners of the backbox, replacing the factory original used parts in these locations. Brand new leg protector pads have also been supplied with this game to help prevent against any damage (scratches, scuffs) from the normal mounting of the metal legs on the corners of the main cabinet- this will help preserve the newly-repainted artwork
All hardware (nuts, bolts, screws) on the cabinet on this game have been reconditioned or replaced with new parts as required, for a brand new appearance. Backbox interior has been stripped, including the removal of the metal shields inside for proper cleaning and reconditioning before reassembly.
Backglass on this game is a brand new/unused piece and is in "mint" condition in every aspect. Original stainless steel lift channel and black plastic side and top moldings have been retained and are in excellent condition- attached to the new backglass with original style black "friction tape" as originally used at the factory.
Playfield on this game is in outstanding condition from top to bottom. It is an original playfield, and we can confidently say the best condition used playfield we have ever come across for a used Firepower game. Only a few very tiny minor touch-ups were done to the playfield after it was stripped and cleaned, and the restored field was then clearcoated to preserve it's finish and protect for years to come. This clearcoating is similar to modern games that have the "Diamondplate" finish, or the late-model Stern games that use similar coatings.
The playfield in this game has been retro-fitted with drop targets in place of the six original round stationary "standup" targets in the center of the playfield. Firepower was originally designed to use two 3-bank drop target assemblies in the center of the playfield, but for unknown reasons (possibly cost-cutting or potential maintenance issues), the drop target units were scrapped early in the game's production, and the stationary round targets put in their place. Only a very few Firepower games actually made it out of the factory with the original drop target units in place. Many other early-production games that had the round targets placed in them at the last minute shipped with several wires under the playfield that were bundled and taped up with black electrical tape- these were originally used for the extra switches and coils on the drop target units. Most of these games still retained the original 500-point "rebound" switches that went behind the rubber ring in back of the drop targets, but
A very early production playfield with the drop target assembly wiring in place was used for reference during our retro-fit so that we could not only determine what wiring was required and where it was supposed to go, but so that we could retro-fit the existing "later production" wiring harness in this game with the proper wires and wire routing.
Both drop target units on this game feature new target decals (correct prototype art decals), and reconditioned wiper contact switch PC boards on the back of the target assemblies (6 total). All in addition to a full reconditioning of all associated parts and mechanisms to make these units look and work like new again. Drop target wiper contacts and PC board traces have also been treated with an anti-oxidant compound to improve their reliability and increase performance during play.
Plastics on the playfield on this game are original and in excellent condition with no cracks or breaks and no unsightly wear spots or other damage. All have been cleaned- top and bottom sides- and installed and secured with brand new white nylon cap nuts, just like original design.
The translucent red lane guides at the top of the playfield (around the "F-I-R-E" lanes) are originals (with the correct "embossed cross" design) and are low-mileage parts- all have retained their original deep rich red color- and appear new in all respects. These really look gorgeous! These are some of the hardest parts to find new replacements for- for Firepower and other games that used them- so we are fortunate to have a good well-preserved set of these for use on this game.
The pop bumper caps on this game (4 total) are also originals and unique in that they remain unfaded and un-yellowed like most original Firepower bumper caps on most games. These are still a bright, crisp white color, with vivid black and red printing. No blemishes and no signs of yellowing or other damage from use or age.
All mechanisms on the playfield (including kickers, bumpers, flippers, and more) have all been painstakingly overhauled and reconditioned/restored to new condition for good looks and proper reliable operation.

 | Playfield- restoration complete and fully reassembled/working. |
 | Detail- lower section of playfield- flippers and slingshot bumpers area. |
 | Detail- right side of playfield. Right 3-bank drop targets and right 3-bank standup targets seen here. |
 | Detail- shot across playfield to left side. Note the restored finish on the stainless steel ball rail guides in left outlane and left ball lock saucer lane. Our own proprietary in-house process for restoring these rails removes unsightly ball marks that build up over the years, and restores the metal to it's original finish with it's original "grain"- just like "day one". |
 | Detail- left kickback outlane and slingshot bumper. |
 | Detail- center and upper left corner areas of playfield. Pop bumper caps on this game are original and this particular set still is very bright white with vivid printing of artwork (most caps on Firepower games will fade to a yellowed color from time and use). Note new decals installed on spinner on left side of playfield, to restore it's original look. |
 | Upper right section of playfield. A small bit of wear is present on the wood side-rail on the right side of the playfield- just above the exit gate from the plunger lane. This is about the only spot on the playfield that would give any hint that this game is actually used/reconditioned and not still brand new. |
 | Upper playfield- top rollover lanes and pop bumper area. No wear in these areas, as is common to see on other Firepower games. Extremely well-preserved original playfield. |
 | Pop bumper area- view from the right. |
 | Under-playfield view- flippers area. Note the cleanliness of the under-side surface of the playfield which only comes with a true full restoration. Flipper mechanisms are 100% brand new featuring new modern Williams flipper baseplates and supporting parts, including all mechanical and electrical parts. The modern design is a big improvement over the original assemblies designed in 1980 and are much more reliable, better performing, easier to maintain and repair, and easy to acquire replacement parts for.
Note the new reproduction lithograph decal on the end plate of the right flipper assembly. This decal was placed on games that used the Lane-Change™ feature, to describe the function of the additional switch on the flipper assembly, which was used to trigger Lane-Change™. |
 | Under-playfield view of full playfield. Note the drop target assemblies mounted in original factory-designated location and featuring original Williams parts. |
 | Playfield Close-Ups:
Center target inserts. Some minor touch-up was done around these in the solid black areas before clear coating in order to restore the original look to them. No lettering or artwork was worn off of any of the inserts on this game during it's use before we acquired it- it was a very low-mileage game. But some of the solid black was touched up/cleaned up around many of the inserts as part of the restoration process.
There is slight playfield blemish present in this area which is a faint black "streak" going up from the tip of the "1" insert (into the red area) which we just can't get to show up on the digital camera/pics very well (more visible in next pic), but it is mentioned here for accuracy.
|
 | More of center playfield inserts.
|
 | Shot of spinner in left orbit lane. A lot of glare here from the camera flash (sorry) so please ignore any ill effects of the flash (spinner is actually in mint condition (w/new decals front and back) and what looks like wear in the lower left corner is a reflection of the flash from the stainless steel ball guide rail to the left).
Red arrow insert in front of spinner has a tiny gap around the bottom and right sides and appears to be slightly higher than the playfield surface, but does not affect the ball or play in general. Possibly a defect from it's original manufacture process at the factory, or just the age of this used/restored playfield and game.
|
 | Right lock saucer entrance and left of pop bumpers area. Green arrow insert has what appears to be slight printing blemish around top area from factory manufacturing, and is raised just a hair above playfield surface at the top.
|
 | Lower center playfield area. All inserts in this area are in fantastic shape. This area of the playfield really tells the tale of how well this game was preserved during it's lifetime and how truly "low-mileage" the game really is. This area is undoubtedly the "highest traffic" area on any game, so this is the area where you'll typically see wear and tear show up first. We think you'll agree that this really is an outstandingly well-preserved original playfield, especially for a used/restored game.

Cabinet/Backbox:
Thumbnail (Click for larger view) | Description |
 | Overall view. |
 | Main cabinet, right side. Note brand new stainless steel side rails with new chrome "twist nails" for mounting. Also NOS white flipper buttons installed, new legs, leg protector pads, leg bolts, levelers, etc. |
 | Main cabinet- left side. |
 | Backbox- right side. Backglass is brand new and features original stainless steel lift channel and black plastic side and top moldings, secured with brand new friction tape (as originally used by factory). |
 | Backbox- left side. |
 | Front of main cabinet / coin door. Note brand new legs and bolts, restored coin door, and new reproduction coin door price tags (Quarters/Dollars). |
 | Coin door interior. All parts on this door have been removed, disassembled, and individually restored by hand, then reassembled to factory specs. Original working coin mechanisms are present. Note the new reproduction decals installed on the door's interior, including the price tag and coin mechanism changing decals (left, inside door panel), "press for credits" decal on right coin chute switch cover, and new decal for diagnostic/test button panel (right). |
 | Front of game- lockdown bar latch assembly and coin door interior. Lockdown bar latch assembly is typically a "catch-all" for dirt, grime, liquids, and other debris from years of use and usually is the dirtiest and most worn part on the game. This latch assembly was no exception, but we have diassembled and cleaned it, and restored it's finish to original condition. And have topped it off with some new reproduction lithograph decals including the "caution" decal in center, and "tested by #23" decal at right. Brass adjustment screws have also been refinished- the entire assembly looks new again.
Note original metal coin box and lid inside game's front door. |
 | Main cabinet interior. Interior has been stripped of all parts and cleaned, with everything cleaned and restored before being reassembled. Cabinet features brand new heavy-duty leg bolt mounting plates in each of the corners which help prevent stripping of the leg bolts and add to the strength/durability of the cabinet. Note the original metal coin box and lid still present and new reproduction Instruction Booklet envelope stapled to front right corner of cabinet interior. |
 | Main cabinet interior- front left corner including tilt mechanisms & wiring. |
 | Insert panel behind backglass. Note the cleanliness of this panel. All lamps are new and have been replaced with #47 bulbs which consume less current and produce less heat- both of which help extend the life of parts in the backbox. All display assemblies are original and in great shape. |
 | Backbox interior. All parts you see here have been removed from the game, restored, and reassembled from the bare wood on up. Note the cleanliness of the interior- both backbox and back of the insert panel. No stone left unturned here.
Connector pin solder joints have been reflowed with fresh solder on all circuit boards to eliminate hairline cracks from vibration/age, and to improve reliability. Driver board has had new 5-watt flameproof resistors installed in place of the old 2-watt ceramic resistors in the lamp driver section. This cuts down on heat and helps preserve the board. MPU board has had new combo ROM chip kit installed for Firepower, with necesary modifications done (reversible). New remote-mount battery kit has also been added to get the batteries off the valuable MPU board, and help prevent damage should they go neglected and leak (common problem in most older games). Kit has a quick-disconnect connector for easy removal of board from game should it ever need service.
Note also the new reproduction sound board tech sheet stapled to the back of the insert panel- just like the way the game originally came from the factory. |

 | Playfield after clearcoating, curing in the paint room. |
 | Playfield bottom side- reassembly just starting. Still a LONG WAY to go. This is a very detailed, slow, "inch by inch" process. All mechanisms/assemblies have to be overhauled, cleaned, restored, and rebuilt. Every lamp socket, screw, solder lug, and wire has to be reconditioned and properly attached. One at a time. |
 | Ray busy at work wiring the under-side of the playfield during reassembly. |
 | Playfield top side reassembly just started. |
 | Main cabinet during repainting process. Black basecoat applied. |
 | Main cabinet fully repainted and prepped for reassembly. |
 | Main cabinet assembly underway. New stainless steel side-rails installed- these still have the protective plastic film on them from the manufacturer in this shot. |
 | New stainless steel side rails installed, and protective masking being removed. Look at that shine! |
 | Ground braid installating being started in main cabinet. Braid was installed in the same direction, and with same routing and staple location, as originally done at the factory. |
 | Backbox interior. Metal shielding all cleaned and re-installed. Awaiting circuit board mounting brackets and other hardware. |
 | Backbox during repainting process. Left side ready for red paint. |
