Interested Buyers Please Note:
Thank you for your interest in this classic and professionally restored pinball game. Even if you are "just looking" and not necessarily in the market for a game such as this, we appreciate your stopping by for a look! We hope you enjoy what you see here!
As is common on higher-end games and restorations such as this one, we typically get a tremendous amount of interest and questions from our customers on fine details about game condition- amid many other general inquiries. Interested buyers are respectfully reminded that this game is, and always will be, a used pinball game, going on about 27 years of age at this point, and while it does look and play fantastically in every way, it is in no way a brand new unused machine and may not necessarily exhibit all of the inherent characteristics commonly found in a brand new unused machine- cosmetically, mechanically, or electronically. Just like a classic antique car may be restored to "like new condition", it will never ever again be "brand new". The same truths apply to a restored pinball machine as well.
If you are looking for "absolute mint condition", "microscopic perfection", quality that rivals NASA or Military specifications, or basically something that is 100% flawless and never had any use or wear/tear of any kind, we kindly invite you to peruse the selection of brand new pinball machines for sale that we have listed on our website.
While this game has been extensively restored and reconditioned to not only look and play like new, but to be as reliable as possible in it's use, it is a known fact that all pinball machines- old or new- will require some adjustment, maintenance, service, and repair as time goes on. There simply is no such thing as a "zero maintenance" pinball machine- anywhere. And vintage pinball games such as this one that not only have many moving parts, but also have the inherent aspect of older age on their side, may tend to require a bit more upkeep in their day-to-day operation simply due to their age and previous use. This game is offered for sale under these conditions and based on these considerations.
We ask any interested buyers to please carefully consider the aspects and responsibility of owning and maintaining a used, restored pinball game, understanding that occasional repairs, adjustments, maintenance, and service will more-or-less be an integral part of owning and using a vintage game such as this one, as time goes on.
Repairs and adjustments of this type are not covered under warranty for non-local customers (customers outside the local Salt Lake City, Utah, area), so any such interested customers are advised to take the above information into consideration before making a decision to purchase or not to purchase this game. If you need any further information, please e-mail us. Thank You! - Action Pinball & Amusement Management & Staff

Game Description:
was produced in early 1980 during the height of one of arcade pinball's most popular eras. Like most games created by Williams' designer Steve Ritchie Firepower was ahead of it's time- pushing the boundaries and limits of the available technology at that time. Williams, along with Ritchie, created some of the top titles in pinball history, including Firepower, Black Knight, Flash, Stellar Wars, and many others.
Firepower's legend was in establishing itself as the first solid-state (electronic) pinball to offer Multiball™ play. Multiball™ was a feature where the player could play 1, 2, or 3 balls at a single time, depending on the mode that was completed, or accomplished, during play. Multiball play was found on some earlier electro-mechanical pinball games- especially those made by Bally- such as Four Million B.C. and Fireball in 1972. But Firepower brought Multiball™ into the modern electronic age, and there it stayed. Other Multiball™ games that soon followed were Black Knight, Scorpion, Pharaoh, and many others as time moved forward into the 1980's. Today, Multiball™ is a common pinball feature which all new games have. A pinball without Multiball™ play today would be considered very unusual.
The object of Firepower is to achieve Multiball™ play. This is done by lighting two of the three ball saucers on the playfield, and shooting balls into the saucers when lit. When a ball goes into a lit saucer, the ball is kept, or "locked", and another ball is served into the plunger lane to be shot into play.
After 2 balls have been successfully locked, a 3rd ball is served, and shot into play. As soon as the 3rd ball is in play, the previous 2 balls are released from their saucers, and the player enjoys simultaneous 3-ball Multiball™ play. When 2 of the 3 balls are lost from play, normal "single ball" play resumes, and the player can again work toward lighting "locks" and accomplishing Multiball™ again.
Scoring is always higher in Multiball™ mode, since two or three times the usual number of balls are in play. In most modern games, it is common to have a "jackpot" shot that the player has to make during Multiball, to collect a very large bonus or other award. But in early Multiball™ games, Multiball™ play itself was the award (along with inherent increased scoring). Players had seldom, if ever, experienced Multiball™ play on a pinball game before, so in 1980 when Firepower was released, this was the hot new pinball benchmark!
Firepower was also one of several "talking" pinball games produced by Williams, the first of which was Gorgar produced one year earlier. Complete the top F-I-R-E lanes and hear the game say "FIRE!" Complete multiball to hear "Misson accomplished!" and "Enemy destroyed!" among several other well-integrated and exciting speech clips.
Firepower is probably the one solid-state pinball made by Williams that can be credited with having the best computer-generated sound effects during play. It has one of the best background sounds during play and many fast-paced, exciting effects to go with target strikes and other game play events- definitely a landmark game in accomplishments with pinball sound.
Firepower also features several long, sweeping shots on the playfield- typical of designer Steve Ritchie's more popular layouts. Play seems to naturally "flow" on this playfield- whether you're shooting to lock balls, completing targets to light locks, or going for the top lanes to complete F-I-R-E and increase bonus multipliers. A "kickback" unit in the left outlane sends the ball back into play when lit. Complete either center target bank to re-light the kickback. Firepower features Lane Change™, which uses the right flipper button to rotate the lights of the top rollover lanes, making it easier to complete them during play. Lane Change™ became a standard on pinball games in later years and is considered a commonplace feature on all new pinball games today.
Recently returned to "like-new" condition, this game plays lightning-fast with strong, crisp flipper shots and fast bumper and ball action- everywhere on the playfield. Switches and bumpers are extremely responsive- after only one game on this machine you'll think you were back at the arcade in 1980 playing a brand new pinball again! There is no greater experience in pinball than playing a top-condition, exciting, fast-paced game like this one, and after a few plays on this vintage classic, we're sure you'll agree!

Overall:
Over 170 hours have been invested in the excruciating detailed restoration of this legendary classic Williams pinball game. It easily meets our criteria for a "Collector Condition" rating, which is our top rating for a used, reconditioned, restored game.
Before restoration, this particular game had obviously seen far-below-average use, and it had been our suspicion all along that this was a game that either stayed in one location and got very limited play for most of it's life, or more likely was pulled off location early in it's life and sat in storage- unoperated and unused- for most of its years. The cleanliness of the game- inside and out- and the obvious signs of very limited use on the playfield and it's components had convinced us that this was truly a low-mileage game to begin with, so with it's parts and components in prime condition, was the best candidate for a high-end restoration of this caliber.
Cabinet and Backbox on this game (entire cabinet) have been fully repainted from top to bottom in original factory paint colors and style with original factory design faithfully reproduced. The whole cabinet has a fresh, brand-new appearance, and has a very smooth finish. All signs of use on this game over the years have been erased from this cabinet with the repaint work so the entire cabinet- inside and out- is essentially again in "brand new" condition- absolutely gorgeous. Brand new white nylon gliders have been installed in original locations on the back of the main cabinet, and on the underside corners of the backbox, replacing the factory original used parts in these locations. Brand new leg protector pads have also been supplied with this game to help prevent against any damage (scratches, scuffs) from the normal mounting of the metal legs on the corners of the main cabinet- this will help preserve the newly-repainted artwork
All hardware (nuts, bolts, screws) on the cabinet on this game have been reconditioned or replaced with new parts as required, for a brand new appearance. Backbox interior has been stripped, including the removal of the metal shields inside for proper cleaning and reconditioning before reassembly.
Backglass on this game is a brand new/unused piece and is in "mint" condition in every aspect. A brand new Alan Meyer reproduction chrome lift channel has been installed on the glass to restore the original look and functionality. Original black plastic side and top moldings have been retained and are in excellent condition- attached to the new backglass with original style black "friction tape" as originally used at the factory.
Playfield on this game is a rare genuine factory NOS playfield, made in 1980 and simply never used sinced it was manufactured. This field is one of only three NOS Firepower playfields that we know to exist, and is known for being one of the most rare to find for a game of this era. The NOS playfield in this game was professionly clearcoated before assembly, in order to add some substantial protection and improved finish to it's surface. This clearcoating is similar to modern games that have the "Diamondplate" finish, or the late-model Stern games that use similar coatings.
The playfield in this game has been retro-fitted with drop targets in place of the six original round stationary "standup" targets in the center of the playfield. Firepower was originally designed to use two 3-bank drop target assemblies in the center of the playfield, but for unknown reasons (possibly cost-cutting or potential maintenance issues), the drop target units were scrapped early in the game's production, and the stationary round targets put in their place. Only a very few Firepower games actually made it out of the factory with the original drop target units in place. Many other early-production games that had the round targets placed in them at the last minute shipped with several wires under the playfield that were bundled and taped up with black electrical tape- these were originally used for the extra switches and coils on the drop target units. Most of these games still retained the original 10-point "rebound" switches that went behind the rubber ring in back of the drop targets, but
A very early production playfield with the drop target assembly wiring in place was used for reference during our retro-fit so that we could not only determine what wiring was required and where it was supposed to go, but so that we could retro-fit the existing "later production" wiring harness in this game with the proper wires and wire routing so that it was 100% exact to factory standards. That is, wires for the drop target units were not simply "soldered on where they had to go", but were integrated into the wiring harness and run to the proper points of origin (other switch lugs or to corresponding connector pins) so that they were authentic to the factory's original design and layout. Looking at this wiring harness, it would be virtually impossible for even the best trained eye to determine that it was not a factory original. Painstaking efforts were made to ensure that we not only routed the wires correctly into the harness, but that the correct wire colors were used, and that the harnesses were
Both drop target units on this game feature NOS plastic targets (6 total), new target decals (correct prototype art decals), and NOS wiper contact switch PC boards on the back of the target assemblies (6 total). All in addition to a full reconditioning of all associated parts and mechanisms to make these units look and work like new again. Drop target wiper contacts and PC board traces have also been treated with an anti-oxidant compound to improve their reliability.
Components used on the top and bottom sides of the playfield in this game (everything from wireforms, rail guides, light bulbs, and wires in the harnesses) came from the original "low mileage" playfield and were chosen due to their excellent overall condition (mostly due to the "low mileage"). Usually the worst condition playfields are chosen to sacrifice their parts so that a new playfield can be installed, but in this particular case, we sacrificed what would be considered an "excellent" playfield, just to get the "excellent" parts for the restoration.
All playfield flat plastics (or "light shields") on this game's playfield are NOS- all factory originals that had never been used before. This set was truly a rare find for us- found several years ago- and we retained them with many of this game's other parts for use in this exclusive restoration. The plastics on this field look like they just came from the factory assembly line- smooth, glossy, flawless surfaces on all of them with no scratches or signs of use or handling.
The translucent red lane guides at the top of the playfield (around the "F-I-R-E" lanes) are originals (with the correct "embossed cross" design) and are low-mileage parts- all have retained their original deep rich red color- and appear new in all respects. These are some of the hardest parts to find new replacements for- for Firepower and other games that used them- so we are fortunate to have a good well-preserved set of these for use on this game.
The pop bumper caps on this game (4 total) are also originals and unique in that they remain unfaded and un-yellowed like most original Firepower bumper caps on most games. These are still a bright, crisp white color, with vivid black and red printing. No blemishes and no signs of yellowing or other damage from use or age.
All mechanisms on the playfield (including kickers, bumpers, flippers, and more) have all been painstakingly overhauled and reconditioned/restored to new condition for good looks and proper reliable operation.

Playfield re-population continuing. Still a LONG WAY to go. This is a very detailed, slow, "inch by inch" process. All mechanisms/assemblies have to be overhauled, cleaned, restored, and rebuilt. Every lamp socket, screw, solder lug, and wire has to be reconditioned and properly attached. One at a time.

One of the two drop target banks nearing completion of it's restoration. Each drop target bank received NOS plastic drop targets, new target decals, and NOS contact switch PC boards on the back side. All-new jumper wires were installed on the PC boards, and wiring from the harness was connected to the PC boards with fresh, clean, new joints.
As these drop target units were a retro-fit on to this particular playfield (only a few very rare prototype Firepower games actually shipped with drop target banks, as originally intended in the game's design), the wiring to the drop target banks had to literally be "installed" or "added" in to the game's harnesses. We spent a tremendous amount of time and effort to make this as "original" as possible. We didn't just "tack and run" wires to and from where they needed to go- each wire that was added in to the harness was of the exact proper gauge, correct matching insulator color & trace color, and was routed through (or assimilated into) the wiring harness in the exact manner as originally done by the factory- including the correct type and placement of nylon tie-wraps, and ensuring that the wires came from, and ran to, the proper sources and desinations, as originally done by the factory on the genuine prototype games. Closely examining the harness in this game, you would not be able to tell that it w

Ground braid installating being started in main cabinet. Braid was installed in the same direction, and with same routing and staple location, as originally done at the factory.
NOS factory original start button assembly awaiting installation for the first time on this restored game.

NOS factory original stainless steel coin door "skin". Here's a rare find! This is a factory original unused coin door "blank"- including the side hinge and copper "inserts" on the interior side- that we acquired several years ago and have held on to for just the right project. The pre-drilled holes on this blank had to be tapped (threaded) for it's assembly, so it truly was a virgin piece. This skin helped us bring even the coin door itself back to "day one" original look and condition.
Coin door entry plate assembly and associated parts. Several parts on this sub-assembly were new or NOS, including the three NOS white plastic coin "chutes", and the new coin slot "price tags".
Backbox interior. Metal shielding all cleaned and re-installed. Awaiting circuit board mounting brackets and other hardware.
Backbox during repainting process. Left side ready for red paint.
