Game Description:

Funhouse is well-known as one of the top 5 most popular, collectible, and in-demand games ever made by Williams Electronics, and has as much, if not more of a popular following now, as it did when it was created in 1990. Top-condition examples of this popular game are still very much in demand, and games of similar condition/quality have recently sold for as high as $5,600.00 on eBay in past months. Funhouse was the first pinball in the industry to sport many new and "first time" features including Rudy, the talking dummy, two ball plungers (left & right), and of course the first game to feature the complete modern WPC electronics system, which was used throughout the 1990's in all of Bally and Williams' pinball games.

Funhouse was created by legendary Bally/Williams pinball designer Pat Lawlor, who also created such classic popular games as
The Addams Family, Twilight Zone, Whirlwind, Road Show, Earthshaker, Roller Coaster Tycoon, No Good Gofers, and more!

Probably the most popular or well-known feature of Funhouse is the real, working, talking, ball-eating mechanical man (or "head") on the playfield- affectionately known as "Rudy". Rudy's face comes alive with animation during game play from his initial "Come on in!" greeting, when you start a game, all the way to demeaning taunts and laughs that scorn your pinball skills! Watch Rudy's eyes follow the ball around the playfield, and watch his jaw move as he talks to you and even gobbles up balls shot into his mouth!

In this game, you are Rudy's guest in the Funhouse and have to play your way through all the attractions, hazards, and mysteries of the amusement park's favorite place! But watch the clock! Advance the clock to midnight by hitting targets and locking balls, and you'll put Rudy to sleep- watch his eyelids get heavy, speech slow down, and finally eyes close, with his mouth hanging open as he snores- fast asleep! Shoot the ball into his mouth while he slumbers and jolt him back to life- watching his eyes open wide as he coughs, hacks, and finally spits the ball back out at you to start a wild fast-paced 3-ball Multiball mode of play!

Shoot both of the ramps and try to get the ball up the "steps" atop the left ramp, by shooting from the left ball plunger (an industry first on this game!) Score on the steps- anything from half a million points, to an extra ball!

Beware the pitfalls! Watch out for the Whirlwind Tunnel beneath the Mystery Mirror! Collect awards as your ball finds it's way through the tunnels and back out at the flippers! And mind the Trap Door! An actual working trap door pops up in front of Rudy during game play to capture the ball! Shoot it during Multiball mode and collect big points in the Jackpot!

Even though all the fun, ramps, and gadgets packed into this game will be more than enough to keep you busy, the game play is fun and straightforward enough to be entertaining and fun for any players, regardless of skill and age. These are the true signs of a well-designed pinball, and we're sure after a game or two, you'll agree! Not too much to overwhelm the novice player, but plenty to keep you challenged and always coming back for more!

Game Condition Details:

NOTE: A large amount of detail/information is given below on the condition of this game, in regard to it's higher collectible value, and often-common multiple inquiries that we usually receive regarding intricate detail on "high end" popular games such as this one. We apologize in advance for the "extra reading" but want to convey as accurate a depiction of the game's details as possible for those customers who cannot visit our shop to see/play this game in person before buying. Customers are reminded to keep in mind that this is a used game- fully reconditioned- but is not brand new, or flawlessly perfect. If you have any questions or require any additional information or pictures, just
e-mail us.

Overall:
This game is in overall great shape for a vintage classic used/reconditioned game. It has seen comparitively lower-than-average use over it's lifetime, and has had very good upkeep, which has helped to preserve it's original condition as well as possible- far better than most games that have been around since the early 1990's. This game originally came to us on a trade-in from a small-town rural operator who used the game only in a few low-traffic, non-smoking locations over it's lifetime, so it has relatively low use and wasn't moved around much, which always helps to preserve any game well. This game is extremely clean inside and out- and does NOT have that common "cigarette smoke smell" from a bar or bowling alley, and no damage from spilled drinks or food either. With the lower-than-average use this game has had during its lifetime, and the good care it's had, it has really had it's original condition preserved well- inside and out. And should continue to serve pinball loving fans for decades t

The cabinet on this game is very clean with very few signs of use- it is very sharp-looking, and still has a nice smooth, glossy finish just like when it came from the factory. No actual fading of the cabinet artwork colors seems to be obvious, although the red/orange printing on the left side of the cabinet is a bit lighter than that of the right side. We've inspected this cabinet closely but don't see any tell-tale signs of UV fading of the artwork that are common to see (such as darker colors under the legs, flipper buttons, hardware (bolts), etc), so assume that it may just have been printed/screened this way when it was being manufactured at the factory. In any case, it is a negligible detail that is hardly noticeable and definitely does not stand out like usual color-fading does on most games, but is mentioned for completeness and accuracy. Be sure to see images below for more details.

There have been a few very small superficial nicks, bumps, and scratches here and there on the cabinet and backbox from lower-than-normal use over the years- most of which have been touched up and are virtually unnoticeable. Any used pinball game, regardless of age, will show some signs of use, as does this game, but it's original condition has been very well preserved for a 13-1/2 year old game, especially one that has always been more popular in the arcades.

Some minor but common signs of "wrinking" of the cabinet finish around the leg mounting areas are present- most of which are not obvious or have been touched-up to make them less apparent. This game comes with a set of brand new pinball leg protector pads which can be installed to help prevent any future wear/tear, and will help conceal most of the past signs of use. See images below for more details (leg protector pads are not present in the images shown below).

Back side of main cabinet has been fully repainted with a closely-matching blue paint, to give it a fresh clean "like new" look. Factory stickers/decals on the back of the game that were faded, scratched, wrinkled, or otherwise worn out or unsightly were removed during the restoration process. Brand new cabinet back nylon gliders have been installed on the back "skids" of the game, just like when it was new, and have also been installed on the under-side edges of the backbox as well, just to preserve the original factory design, and look.

Main cabinet interior sides have been cleaned, refinished, and repainted for a brand new look. This does away with any scratches, nicks, fingerprints, or other signs of use/handling that are common to see on the inside "walls" of the main cabinet on any game, above where the playfield sits. Cabinet interior sides look brand new on this machine- really a nice touch. Entire cabinet interior- main cabinet and backbox- have been fully cleaned and appear fresh and new-looking.

Backbox front surround, top, and some edge spots on the sides have been touched up as well for a clean fresh appearance. All black carriage bolts on the entire game cabinet have been fully removed, refinished, and repainted with original style semi-gloss paint for that "day one" new look.

Front of cabinet (coin door area) is in overall great condition. Two small holes drilled on either side of the coin door for a security lock bar have been filled with two carriage bolts and washers, painted semi-gloss black to match coin door and other original bolts on the cabinet. Coin door has been fully disassembled, parts cleaned, metal parts repainted, and fully reassembled- looks like it just came off the factory assembly line! Many brand new parts have been installed on the coin door on this game including two new 25¢ coin mechanisms, both amber-colored plastic coin slots and push-buttons, as well as coin chute parts and new game lock with keys.

Playfield on this game is in excellent condition all-around, and is one of the few made for Funhouse that has the original dealer-installed Mylar covering on the main/high-traffic areas of the playfield. This Mylar has helped to prevent wear/tear on the playfield over the years, which is an all-too-common problem usually found on most older games that did not have Mylar installed.

The original Mylar covering on this playfield has a few of the typical small air bubbles over some of the "inserts" or "light lenses" in the center/main area of the playfield surface which typically develop on used pinball games over the years from heat expansion/contraction, and are normal to see on any game with original Mylar covering. These imperfections are very minor and do not interfere with game play- basically just a minor cosmetic aspect of a used pinball machine.

Two small pieces of new Mylar were added to this game in the left outlane, and left return lane, to help protect and preserve the playfield artwork in these areas. These are areas where the balls drop from ramps above the playfield, and are more prone to wear/tear over time, so some protective Mylar was added in consideration of this. Two other small pieces of new Mylar were added in the right plunger lane area- one over the 3 flasher "inserts" mid-way up the playfield to help protect against ball wear/tear in the future. And the last piece added at the top of the right loop lane- upper right corner- where ball exits from the plunger lane and goes into play. Some light wear was present in this area and was touched up during the restoration, then covered with protective Mylar to help prevent future wear/tear.

The main original Mylar on this playfield was left in place during the restoration, rather than attempting to have it removed/replaced, due to the very high risk of damage to the playfield when Mylar is removed. A future owner of this game may opt to remove/replace the original Mylar for whatever reason, if he/she chooses, but we do not remove original Mylar covering on games we restore due to the significantly high risk of damaging the playfield artwork beyond repair. (If you've talked with us in the past about Mylar, you may have heard about the High Speed and Black Knight 2000 playfields that were completely destroyed in an attempt to remove Mylar from them... basically a loss of two otherwise near-mint pinball machines. Mylar removal is not recommended and will not be attempted on any game in our shop.)

Entire playfield surface has been cleaned, waxed, and polished, and has an excellent overall appearance. A complete new playfield plastics set has been installed- replacing all original plastic pieces- many of which showed some wear/tear from use over the years. Both left and right ramp assemblies have been replaced with brand new (NOS) factory original ramp assemblies, which we accquired from Williams in 1997, and have kept in storage for a restoration such as this. These ramps are bona-fide Williams originals- NOT aftermarket reproductions. "Cliffy's" famous custom stainless-steel ramp and hole protector set has been added to this game to help protect the brand new ramps, and to protect the edges of the playfield around the Whirlwind Tunnel and scoop kickout holes (see images below).

Playfield metal hardware (ball rail guides) were all removed during restoration process and refinished using our proprietary in-house metal refinishing technique to remove ball marks and other signs of wear/tear- they once again look brand new! And of course all standard items like rubber rings, light bulbs, etc. have been replaced with brand new parts along the way. An overall gorgeous Funhouse playfield!

Translite (backglass artwork) on this game is virtually in mint condition- outstanding shape. Only a very few minor, superficial signs of use may be found but nothing common like unsightly scratches, rub marks, or areas where artwork has been scratched away and allows light to penetrate the translite- it is really in fantastic shape, with no fading of artwork or colors.

Here is a detailed list of work that has been done on this game, followed by more details on parts and game modifications:
  • We have logged just over 75 hours in the restoration of this game.

    Description
    Playfield- overall, finished view.
Upper playfield area. Note both left and right ramps are complete brand new NOS assemblies (genuine Williams parts purchased in 1997 and just recently installed during our restoration of this game.) Rudy has been completely rebuilt- every tiny part that makes him live has been gone over- cleaned, rebuilt, replaced if necessary, and adjusted.
Detail- lower playfield area- flippers and slingshot bumpers area.
Detail- left flipper & slingshot bumper area.
Detail- pop bumper area and lower kickout scoop. This is one of two spots on any Funhouse game that will show playfield wear first- right in front of the lowerk kickout scoop. Note that there is no playfield wear in front of the scoop on this game- a tell-tale sign that this game is a "lower mileage" machine with below-average use during it's lifetime. Note how nice the brand new playfield plastics look on this game- nice reflective scratch-free glossy surfaces- wow!
Detail- right ramp entrance. Note brand new (NOS) blue standup targets on either side of ramp entrance, and Cliffy's custom stainless steel ramp protectors installed (1 of 5 different protectors installed on this game). These will protect the front plastic edges of the ramp from damage from ball hits.
Detail- upper right corner of playfield. Not many Funhouse games out there where you can actually see through the ramps and read what's printed on the playfield surface! Note brand new Trap Door lane plastic installed behind Trap Door- commonly broken or cracked on most used games.
Detail- upper left corner of playfield. Complicated area with lots of hardware and parts! Both ramps cross each other here along with lots of wires, lamps, and other goodies! Note that this game still has it's original orange rubber switch covers on the Steps Ramp- Funhouse was the only game that used these and they are often missing on many used games, and more-or-less impossible to find anymore.
    Detail- upper left flipper area.
    Backward look towards flippers.
Game play- Rudy about to "gobble up" a ball!
Ball coming down right ramp to diverter. Note Cliffy's custom stainless-steel ramp protectors added on either side of diverter to protect ramp from diverter blade damage.
Detail of Trap Door during assembly in restoration. Note rare front support bracket sticking up at front of Trap Door opening in playfield. This unit was rarely installed on Funhouse games and most went out into the field without it. The support bracket helps hold up the front of the Trap Door when it slams shut. Games without this bracket (most of them that were made) will suffer from having the front springsteel flap break off of the Trap Door prematurely- a very difficult and costly repair even if the discontinued replacement parts can be obtained.

This game has the rare support bracket- original Williams part. And the Trap Door will no doubt have a long life as a result! Rudy couldn't be more happy about that!
Pop bumper and plunger lane area. Note the condition of the playfield surrounding the immediate right side of the blue pop bumper (blue area on playfield). NO WEAR in this spot! This spot, in addition to the area in front of the kickout scoop (below blue bumper), are the two most important spots to first look at on any Funhouse game to quickly determine what kind of overall shape the game is in. These are the two spots where playfield wear will show up first, and a quick look at them will tell you what kind of "mileage" is on the machine, what kind of upkeep the game has had, and give a good idea of the overall condition of the game. No signs of wear whatsoever on these two crucial spots on this game- outstanding.

There is a bit of light superficial surface wear (but no worn-away artwork) in the plunger lane area to the right of the 3 pop bumpers where the ball leaves the plunger lane gate and travels to the metal ramp. Basically some signs of ball traffic as the balls get a lot of time in this area on all Funhouse games- both from bouncing around the pop bumpers as well as coming out of the shooter lane and going to the metal ramp where they're taken to the top of the playfield. So normal to see some signs of use in this area. A light "trail" from balls can be seen over the white, red, and blue light inserts in the plunger lane in this shot. Some protective Mylar was added over the plunger lane area in this spot to help prevent any future wear.
Playfield underside view. Note fully cleaned playfield bottom surface- no dust, grease, or dirt to be found on the underside of this playfield. Most used games are black as soot under here, but every square inch of this playfield has been cleaned- top and bottom- you could literally eat off the bottom of this field as it is so clean. Note rebuilt flipper assemblies with brand new flipper rebuild kits installed, as well as brand new flipper coils on all three flipper assemblies. Note under-playfield clear plastic ramp- fully removed, cleaned, and reassembled. Under-playfield ramps in most games are dirt/dust traps and very few pinball dealers in the world will take the time needed to properly remove, clean, and properly overhaul these units. Cleaning a game but leaving the under-playfield ramps dirty will just bring all that d

All lamp PC boards have been removed, lamp "inserts" in playfield cleaned, lamp PC boards cleaned, lamps replaced, and connector pins on all PC boards have had their solder reflowed to "beef up" the connections and prevent cracked solder joints, which can cause intermittent operation of lamps- very common problem on most games from about 1986-up.
Closeup of lower flippers- both fully rebuilt with new flipper rebuild kits and factory original NOS Williams flipper coils.
Playfield underside view. Top section of under-playfield ramp shown here, as well as fully rebuilt Rudy jaw gears, and Trap Door assembly. Black & white jaw gears for Rudy are genuine original NOS Williams parts purchased in 1997 and installed during our restoration of this game. These are nearly impossible to find anymore, and many used/neglected Funhouse games have broken gears that won't allow Rudy to "talk" very well.
Detail of Rudy jaw gears mechanism, Trap Door unit, and ramp diverter mechanism- all fully rebuilt!
    Restoration Pictures:

Playfield- stripped of parts and mechanisms, cleaned, polished, waxed, and reconditioned/new parts being re-assembled on playfield.
Under-playfield shot. Mostly stripped of parts, being cleaned, and units being rebuilt and slowly re-installed on playfield.
"Rudy" being rebuilt on the shop bench. Not as easy or simple as it might look- the whole proper rebuild of Rudy takes about half-a-day's work for a knowledgeable, experienced technician.
Rudy's jaw gears being installed on the motor drive unit, as it is rebuilt. Gears are factory original NOS Williams parts.
Whirlwind Tunnel ball entrance scoop being installed. This scoop takes a beating from balls being drilled into it from strong, fast flipper shots, and it's common to see this unit break, or at least come loose and even fall off the underside of the playfield on heavily-used or neglected games. No such problems with this game, but as a preventative measure, we have re-installed this scoop with oversize hex head screws to really secure it well to the bottom of the playfield surface.
Detail- right slingshot bumper unit being rebuilt/reassembled. Note brand new fender washers installed on top of post screws to help protect plastics mounted on top of the slingshot bumper.
Detail- stainless steel ball rail guides installed in upper right corner (ball lock) area of playfield. All rails on this game have been refinished to remove ball marks and give a "day one" new look.

    After:
Detail- playfield restoration. Edges of Mylar cleaned. Most Mylar will collect dirt around the edges over time which can be very unsightly. We have a special method we use to clean Mylar edges on the games we restore which makes them nearly invisible to normal view. Really makes a difference!
Detail- lower playfield- flippers area. Restored and ready for parts.
Detail- upper right corner of playfield. This area, with artwork and text, is rarely seen on Funhouse games as most have gone neglected or incompletely overhauled and as a result, the plastic ramps that cover this area are too dirty or worn to see through. This section is clearly visible through the ramps on this game (see previous pictures). This area had a little bit of playfield wear on it when we received the machine, and we've done some touch-up work and installed some Mylar over this section of the right orbit lane to help protect against future wear/tear, as this loop shot gets a lot of traffic from balls launched from the plunger, and shot up around the "Gangway" loop.
Playfield- partially reassembled. Most of the "lower level" parts installed- awaiting ramps and related sub-assemblies.
Wow! Here's something you rarely see anymore- TWO NOS Funhouse ramp units in original unopened Williams factory packaging. These ramps were purchased directly from Williams in 1997 when they were still being made, and installed during our restoration of this game. These are extremely rare parts anymore. Reproductions have been done of both ramps by one aftermarket source on occasion but sold out fast and aren't currently available anymore. Here's the real deal- original Williams parts for this Funhouse restoration! It doesn't get any better than this!

    Description
    Overall view.
    Right side of main cabinet.
    Left side of main cabinet.
Detail- left side of main cabinet. Note some small superficial scuffs/scratches in the artwork here.
Front of game, and coin door. Note fully reconditioned coin door, with brand new plastic amber coin slots and reject buttons, as well as new lock with keys. Both plungers have been replaced and rebuilt with brand new plunger rebuild kits, which include new plunger & knob, inner and outer springs, plunger sleeve, and retaining clips.
Cabinet interior. Note repainted cabinet sides with all hardware having been removed, cleaned, and replaced. Also NOS coin box with metal lid, new ball plungers (left and right) and fully rebuilt coin door with several new parts. Tags added for service/battery change reminders.
Cabinet interior- right side- power interface box, transformer, etc.
Backbox- right side. Some small nicks/scratches on outer edges of both backbox sides have been touched up and are not obvious or apparent.
    Backbox- left side.
Backbox- top. Top side of backbox has been repainted. Note refinished carriage bolts and original warranty sticker still in place.
Backbox interior and circuit boards. Game still has it's original retaining bolts that secure the backbox in the upright position (original style introduced in the late 1980's). Note also the brand new remote-mount battery holder and fresh Energizer batteries. This unit gets the three "AA" batteries off the valuable MPU board, and relocates them "off-board", preventing any potential damage to the MPU board should the batteries ever be neglected to the point where they burst and leak (common problem in all pinball machines from 1977 to present). Remote-mount unit has quick-disconnect connector to ease in removal of the MPU board should it ever need to be serviced.
    Backbox front- overall view.
Back side of translite (backglass artwork). Outstanding condition for an original translite. No common scratches or chips that allow light to penetrate all the way through the translite, which is so common on most used games- really nice shape.
Rear of game. Back of main cabinet has been repainted with new blue paint. Vent grilles were removed, cleaned, and repainted. Old worn manufacturer's decals have been removed. Note new white nylon gliders installed on rear skids for that "like new" look!
Main cabinet during restoration. Being stripped of parts, and playfield assembly removed after being restored, to allow proper, and complete, cleaning of the cabinet interior before cabinet restoration.
Documentation & paperwork included. Most, if not all, of the original factory paperwork originally shipped with this machine, has been retained with it over the years, including the game manual, operator's handbook, letters and notes from Williams, spare score/price cards, and even the original Star Tech Journal subscription form! One 2-page letter from Williams is included which talks about Funhouse, it's features, new technology designed into the game, and suggested information for game operators for location setup of the game- very interesting to read. All are included with this game.

Like all pinballs we sell, this machine also comes complete with instruction/operation manual and schematics, and fully functional coin door with all parts present and working. For our local customers, this game also includes
delivery, setup, and a full 30-day warranty on parts and labor, at no additional charge. For out-of-town customers, we offer our 30-day Limited Warranty.
