TRIVIA: Hearts & Spades was one of only a few models of "cocktail table" (sit-down) pinball games made by various companies in the late 1970's. These games were quite unique in their time, and even moreso today, and still remain fun novelty type pinball games and great conversation pieces and additions to home game rooms everywhere.

Game Description:
Hearts & Spades is a 1- or 2-player "cocktail table" model pinball game featuring electronic operation and scoring, combined with mechanical "chimes" for scoring, which give it a classic vintage pinball feel and sound. The object of the game is to try to score "heart" and "spade" playing cards by hitting various targets on the playfield, and try to collect all of each type. But beware- some targets can take away some of your accumulated hearts or spades, so strategy and flipper skill can come in quite handy in this game!
This game features two single-bank drop targets, three pop bumpers, a ball diverter gate, rollover lanes, rollover buttons, slingshot bumpers, and two flippers. Game can be set for 3 or 5 ball play, and 1 or 2 players can play. Game can be operated on coins (coin door is complete and fully functional), or on "free play" by using an added "credit button" on the front underside of the game cabinet.
Game Condition Details:
Overall:
This game is in overall excellent condition inside and out. Most "vintage" pinball games like this haven't survived well over the years, but this particular game has clearly seen far-below-average use and good upkeep, which have helped preserve it very well.
This Hearts & Spades game is extremely clean inside and out- and does NOT have that common "cigarette smoke smell" from a bar or bowling alley, and no damage from spilled drinks or food either. With the lower-than-average use and good care that this game has had during its lifetime, it has really been preserved well- inside and out. And should continue to serve pinball loving fans for decades to come.
The cabinet on this game is very clean and straight with very few signs of use at all. It is very sharp-looking, and still has a very fresh look to it. Only a few small scuffs and chips have found their way on to the cabinet over the years- a couple small chips in the woodgrain "formica" finish and so forth. But nothing major or unsightly. The top glass and frame assembly on this game, which are unique to Allied Leisure cocktail pinball games, appears original and is still in great shape.
New levelers have been installed on the underside of the game recently, and new locks have been installed on the coin door, and for the top-glass frame- both keyed-alike so they use the same key.
Playfield on this game is in outstanding condition and shows very few signs of any use at all- nearly looks brand new in many aspects. It clearly has seen very little play over the years, and very good upkeep, which have preserved the original look and finish. Only a few very small signs of wear are present- some small areas of wear around a couple of the pop bumper bases, and a small spot at the top "arch" where the ball rebounds after being shot out into play from the plunger. Playfield plastics are in great shape with only a couple of small stress cracks on a few pieces, but no unsightly blemishes or breaks or bad repairs on any- they all look very fresh and presentable.
Here is a detailed list of work that has been done on this game, followed by more details on parts and game modifications:
- Playfield cleaned and polished.
- New protective mylar platters installed recently for all 3 pop bumpers. These help protect and preserve the playfield finish around the bumpers.
- Many playfield posts upgraded with post stud screws to allow for easy removal of plastics for changing light bulbs and rubber rings.
- New t-nuts added to many post screws for added durability and strength. This helps avoid stripped screws in the wood surface and helps keep game play active and fast-paced.
- All playfield plastic posts removed and cleaned by hand with detergent and brush to remove any wax, dirt, grime, or leftover cleaner. They once again look like new!
- Flipper assemblies tuned-up and adjusted for best performance.
- Brand new rubber ring kit installed on playfield, including all round rings, post bumpers, flipper rings, and ball shooter tip.
- Plunger (ball shooter) rebuilt with new external spring and rubber tip.
- Brand new chrome steel pin ball installed in game.
- Brand new bright white nylon cap nuts have been installed on posts to secure plastics and wireform ramps.
- New locks installed on coin door and playfield top glass frame assembly.
- New leg levelers installed on game recently, with locking nuts
.
All electronics (PC boards) in backbox checked and tested for proper operation and good looks (no burned connectors, etc.)
Circuit board connector plugs have had DeoxIT deoxidizing compount applied to prevent intermittent or poor conditions, and increase reliability.
New modern switching power supply installed to replace achaic 5vdc regulated supply assembly. Adds reliability and eases future troubleshooting, repair, and replacement.
List of New Parts on This Game:
Here is a list of most, if not all, new parts that have been installed on this game during the restoration process.
NOTE: ("NOS" means "New Old Stock", and indicates a part that is of original manufacture, new (never used), and authentic (not a reproduction, look-alike, or "aftermarket" part). Most "NOS" parts are discontinued and no longer available from the manufacturer, and can consequently be very hard to find, or expensive if they can even be found.)
(Above values shown are for parts (materials) only- estimated labor cost values that would normally be charged by a repairman or shop are not included in the above prices.)
Custom Modifications:
- Several playfield post screws replaced with studs and t-nuts (under playfield) to allow for easy removal of plastics for light bulb and rubber ring replacement. Adds durability and strength to the posts.
- Modern switching power supply installed in place of old obsolete 5vdc regulated supply. Adds reliability and ease of replacement/repair.
- "Free play" button added on front underside edge of cabinet, along with 2-pin connector which can be disconnected to disable free play. Game can always be run on coins (US quarters) as well.

Detail- lower playfield & flippers area.
Detail- center/top playfield area- pop bumpers. A hint of wear/tear is present around the lower circular edge of the center and right pop bumpers. New clear mylar "platters" have been installed under the bumpers to protect against further wear.
Detail- playfield top area- pop bumpers and top "arch" area. One small spot of wear is present at the left side of the "arch" from where balls rebound after being shot from the plunger lane.
Cabinet/Backbox:

Overall view.
Cabinet- front and right sides. Cabinet on this game is in very good condition with only a few small superficial scuffs here and there and a chip or two in the woodgrain formica finish.
| Cabinet- rear and right sides. Note one small chip in the woodgrain on back side of main cabinet.
The black panels on each of the game's 4 corners are actually built-in "legs". Removing the carriage bolts on them, they can be lowered down (raising up the cabinet) and reinstalled to raise the whole game up off the floor and make it "taller", for stand-up play. See scan of game flyer above for more info.
Main power switch for the game is located in a recessed opening just under the back lower edge of the game. We recommend using a power strip or switched outlet for turning the game on/off as the main power switch is a bit inconvenient to get to on cocktail model games like this. |
Cabinet- front end and coin door interior. Game is set up to operate on coins (US quarters) but can also be run on free-play. A "free play" button has been installed on the underside of the front cabinet (just above coin door) to add credits for free play. This can be disabled by unplugging a 2-pin connector on the lower inside edge of the coin door.
Cabinet interior- playfield raised in upright position for access to underside and cabinet interior.
Cabinet interior- power supply, chime unit, tilt mechanisms, and more.
Like all pinballs we sell, this machine also comes complete with instruction/operation manual and schematics, and fully functional coin door with all parts present and working. For our local customers, this game also includes delivery, setup, and a full warranty on parts and labor, at no additional charge. For out-of-town customers, we offer our Limited Warranty.
