About This Medieval Madness Game:
Medieval Madness has proven itself to be the most collectible and desirable pinball machine of all time- and one of the hardest to acquire- being tremendously popular among casual players as well as hard-core pinball collectors. A relatively low number of Medieval Madness games were produced, and as popular and fun to play as the game has been, most have suffered a tremendous amount of use and wear/tear over the years, leaving even fewer good-or-better-condition games still around. One of our all-time most requested games, we're very proud to be able to offer an exceptionally good model of this highly-collectible and sought-after pinball machine.
This particular Medieval Madness game is a U.S. (domestic) model- NOT an export model brought back in from overseas. This game was originally operated by an indoor mall arcade for only a short period of it's life, and never moved from location to location, or exposed to food, drink, or cigarette smoke, like many used pinball machines so commonly are. We acquired the game from it's second owner, a pinball collector, who used it in his home for the majority of it's life. So it was naturally very clean, taken good care of, and well-preserved, even before our extensive restoration work. It has been painstakingly restored to a condition as close to "new" as reasonably possible. This model features several custom modifications and parts add-ons as well as a host of brand new, original, mint-condition replacement parts that enhance existing features and continue to give this game the attractive, fresh "like-new" look, and feel, just like the game was originally designed to have. More
While anyone regardless of skill or age can play this game and have a blast, this particular Medieval Madness game really isn't intended for everyone- the overall condition, modifications, restoration work, and add-ons done to this game make it more of a collector's piece, or game for a hard-core Medieval Madness pinball enthusiast. With the exceptional condition of the game, and vast amount of extra work and parts invested in the game for the restoration and modifications, it is priced accordingly.
If you are looking for a Medieval Madness game, but don't really need quite this much of a game, or are more in the market for one of lesser condition that may better fit your budget, e-mail us and we can put you on our Callback List and let you know if/when your name comes to the top of our waiting list for the next Medieval Madness game that is available.
In addition to our standard full restoration on this game (pictures and more details below), this particular game includes the following unique features, custom modifications, add-ons, and special parts:
(Click any image, or see images below for larger view.)

- NOS Moat Ramp:
Usually always found cracked, broken, glued, and taped-up on this popular and often highly-played game, the famous "green moat ramp" on this game has been replaced with a brand new NOS (new, old stock) original ramp. We searched far and wide for this now rare, and extremely hard-to-find part, and paid a very high price to aqcuire this part to help restore this game to it's original glory. But it's the only way to bring back the original look and functionality of the main feature on this game- the Castle. This ramp has also had some modifications done to/around it to help protect it from damage for future years to come (see below for more info...)

- Custom "hole" protectors added:
Professionaly-made custom stainless steel and aluminum "protectors" have been made and installed on and around areas on the playfield that are especially susceptible to "wear and tear" on this game, in an effort to preserve the original playfield condition and extend the life of the playfield surface and finish. These are:
- Castle gate front metal protector. (With laser-etched "cobble stone" look, to match castle appearance).
- Moat ramp kickout hole protector.
- Castle multiball lock hole protector.
- Merlin hole metal protector.
- NOS Drawbridge with Decals:
Another commonly battered part on this game, the castle drawbridge has been replaced with a brand new part, including brand new decals on top and bottom sides. This drawbridge goes up and down in front of the castle to allow balls to enter the castle (down) or fall into the moat (up), and is usually damaged or worn out from ball wear/tear. Another extremely hard-to-find part, we did extensive searching and paid a premium price to obtain this brand new, original, never-used part to add to the restoration of this classic game.
- New improved reinforced yellow standup targets:
New yellow standup targets added to this game, in front of the Castle entrance. Usually these targets are pulverized on most Medieval Madness games from excessive play and owner neglect. Not only do we replace these targets as part of our standard restoration, but we have installed custom-made targets that feature a heavy-duty reinforced bracket on the back that prevents the target from bending back over time, and causing balls to become airborne after being hit- the main cause of damaged valuable playfield parts. Any Medieval Madness game with standard factory targets, new or used, will not have the reinforcement that these new custom targets have. Another protective feature for this game, to help preserve and extend the life of the playfield and it's components.
- NOS Red "Dragon Wings":
Yet another commonly broken- and usually missing- part on this game. In our extensive search for mint-condition replacement parts for this game, we acquired a brand new original set of red plastic Dragon Wings to install on the Dragon on this game (mounts over the right ramp). Wings are usually broken off by careless owners/operators of the game, or damaged by airborne pinballs which are usually launched at the Dragon from bent/damaged yellow standup targets in front of the castle (see above). Who wants a Medieval Madness with a "one-winged" or even a "wingless" dragon?
- Upgraded "Trolls":
The two Trolls on this game, that pop up from the playfield surface in front of the castle, have been completely rebuilt and reconditioned, including brand new decals on top of the "flaps" above the Trolls themselves. The most common problem with the Troll units on this game, are broken "carriages", which are the metal parts that hold the Trolls to the raising/lowering mechanisms underneath the playfield. During rebuilding of the Troll units, we had the "Troll carriages" MIG welded to strengthen them and help prevent them from breaking or working loose in the future. Custom welding work that is done on parts on the games we recondition and sell is guaranteed for as long as you own the game!
- Remote-Mount MPU Board Battery Holder:
Three "AA" batteries are used in most pinball machines to retain the memory (high scores, settings, adjustments, etc) when the power is turned off. Originally, these batteries are mounted directly on the main MPU circuit board in the backbox. Most people don't know they're there in the first place, or neglect them altogether, which can cause them to go dead and burst and leak battery acid onto the circuit board, thus damaging delicate electronic components, and can often damage the board beyond repair.
To prevent this from happening, and to preserve the valuable MPU board in this game, we have removed the batteries and installed them in a remote-mount holder, off of the MPU board. So should they ever burst and leak, they will not damage any of the delicate circuit boards.
We also include two tags in the game which indicate when the batteries were last replaced, and how to replace them, to ease future maintenance and replacement.
- Game Software Updated:
This game has had it's software updated to the latest available versions. Game ROM on MPU board has been updated to custom revision L1.09C, which is a "Home" version designed for "free play" only (it will not take coins to do pay-for-play). Revision 1.09C is the preferred revision among hard-core Medieval Madness fans, and hosts many new exciting features that can be utilized during game play. For more information on features found in the special 1.09C ROM revision, click here. (Game is optionally available with standard "commercial" version 1.0, at buyer's request.)
MANY more details on game condition including images, and a listing of more new parts and work done on this game, can be found below.
Game Play Description:
Medieval Madness is a modern classic pinball game designed by Williams' famous designer Brian Eddy, who was also involved with the design of other such popular classics as Attack From Mars, Funhouse, Indiana Jones, and The Shadow, just to name a few. It definitely has something for everyone, from the most skilled pinball "wizards" to the casual player or enthusiast alike.
Medieval Madness takes you back to the chivalrous world of kings, knights, castles, damsels-in-distress, and fire-breathing dragons, but with a large cast of nutty characters that will not only keep you on your toes, but keep you doubled-over with laughter!
Shoot for the castle to open the real, working drawbridge and castle gate. But watch out for the two evil (but not too bright) Trolls that pop up out of the playfield to block your way! If you can get past them and into the Castle you can destroy it as part of your quest to defeat the King and all of his men in the ultimate Battle for the Kingdom "wizard" mode!
Shoot through the wall of the castle to lock balls for one of many crazy Multiball modes (this game is LOADED with them!)
Along the way, don't forget to load and shoot the real, working catapault to launch anything from a duck to a cow to a bowling ball at the King's castle in your attempt to destroy it! Shoot the left ramp to appease the peasants and keep them on your side. Shoot past the winged, fire-breathing dragon and up the right ramp and right into the castle tower to rescue the damsel-in-distress.
And what's a knight-on-a-horse without a joust or two? Shoot the left or right orbit shots to joust! Make enough successive shots and become the Joust Champion!
Medieval Madness is known and loved for it's fun, humorous game play, fantastic smooth sweeping shots, great playfield mechanical animation, and speech, sounds, music, and sound effects that amuse and entertain, over and over again. Add Medieval Madness to your pinball collection and it will be the favorite for days and knights to come!
Game Condition Details:
This game is in overall superb condition- we rate it as "Collector Condition", which is our top rating for a used, reconditioned, restored game. This game has seen below-average use, good upkeep, and it definitely shows! It would not be an easy feat to find a used, reconditioned Medieval Madness pinball in much closer-to-new shape than this one! With the limited use this game has had during its lifetime, and the good care it's had, it has really had it's original condition preserved well- inside and out.
The cabinet on this game is very clean with very few signs of use at all- it is very sharp, and still has a nice smooth, clean, glossy finish just like when it came from the factory. There is no fading of the cabinet artwork on this game, as is common on many Medieval Madness games- colors are crisp and bright and not "washed out" or faded. There have been a few VERY small superficial nicks and tiny scratches here and there on the cabinet and backbox from far below-normal use over the years- most of which are not obvious and/or have been touched-up to make them less apparent. See images below for more details.
Playfield is in excellent condition on this game, and the main "high-traffic" spots on the playfield on this game have had protective Mylar applied over them to help preserve the artwork and prevent wear & tear. Some small spots on/around some of the high traffic areas have been touched up lightly before Mylar was applied, to restore their original look and give a clean, fresh appearance. Playfield surface is fully polished and waxed- really a super shine on this field! Playfield parts are all in superb shape- all plastic pieces are fully intact with no broken pieces. See images below for more details.
Translite (backglass) is in top condition with no fading of artwork or colors.
Here is a detailed list of work that has been done on this game, followed by more details on parts and game modifications:
- We have invested just over 60 hours of work in the restoration of this game.
- Playfield top and bottom surfaces stripped of parts and assemblies for proper cleaning- right down to the bare wood and paint. Playfield surface hand cleaned, hand polished, and hand waxed with top-quality Carnauba wax.
- All playfield parts have been removed and hand cleaned, or replaced with brand new parts where necessary. This includes light bulbs, posts, ramps, wireform ball guides, flipper assemblies, under-playfield ramps, target banks, bumper assemblies, lamp PC boards, ball trough and associated parts, and any other parts that are installed on the playfield.
- All metal parts removed from playfield have been hand cleaned and polished for original bright shiny finish. Ball rails (guides) polished with an abrasive fiber wheel to help restore original look.
- All ramps have been completely removed and fully disassembled into all of their individual parts, including having wiring harnesses and switches/plugs removed for proper cleaning. Ramps cleaned, polished, and all associated hardware and accessory parts cleaned, polished, and reassembled.
- Under-playfield plastic ramp (castle moat ramp) has been replaced with a brand new, original (NOS) unit. Foam rubber cushion custom-added to moat ramp inside castle to help prevent cracking in this area (common crack spot on this ramp).
- All playfield plastic posts removed and cleaned by hand with detergent and brush to remove any wax, dirt, grime, or leftover cleaner. They once again look like new!
- All three pop bumper assemblies on this game were removed, 100% disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled. Black bumper skirts replaced with brand new original (NOS) parts on all 3 bumpers. Any other worn or broken parts replaced with brand new parts.
- Both flipper assemblies completely removed, 100% disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt with brand new factory-original parts, and reassembled. Brand new original Williams flipper coils installed. Flippers tuned and adjusted for optimum performance.
- Both flippper bats replaced with brand new bright white plastic bats- original Williams parts with the "W" logo!
- All new rubber rings installed on playfield.
- All light bulbs on top and bottom of playfield, and elsewhere in game, removed, cleaned, and replaced. Brand new light bulbs used as replacements for old worn, discolored, or burned out bulbs and flasher bulbs.
- All light bulb inserts (or "lenses") in playfield surface cleaned and polished for maximum shine and light penetration.
- Brand new chrome steel pinballs installed in game (game uses 4 total).
- Playfield flat plastics (screened artwork) all removed, cleaned, polished, and reinstalled.
- Fender washers installed under top and bottom edges of slingshot bumper plastics to protect them from cracking/breaking from airborne balls.
- Red standup targets on playfield (4 total) have been fully removed, cleaned, replaced, and adjusted for best look and operation.
- Yellow standup targets on either side of castle entrance have been replaced with brand new special heavy-duty units featuring a reinforced bracket on the back side which helps prevent bending back of the target over time from repeated play. This helps avoid "air balls" where a bent-back target would send the ball up into the air with the potential for damaging nearby playfield parts. Durability and longevity of the targets are also extended with these upgraded style targets.
- Custom stainless steel protectors added to 4 crucial areas on playfield, to prevent damage and wear/tear to the playfield surface. See above for more details and pictures.
- Protective Mylar added to high-traffic areas on playfield to help preserve playfield finish and prevent wear/tear.
- Castle Moat kickout scoop has been reinforced with additional welding to prevent cracking and breaking (common problem on this game). Repainted for fresh "new" look. Scoop modification is guaranteed for as long as you own the game!
- Castle Drawbridge has been replaced with brand new original (NOS) factory unit. Includes stainless steel flap on front, and both decals (top and bottom). Nice, fresh "new" look- no damage or signs of wear/tear from ball hits (common on this part, on all Medieval Madness games).
- Castle Gate reinforced with additional welding to prevent cracking and separating of the assembly (common problem on this game). This modification is also guaranteed for as long as you own the game!
- Playfield decals have all been replaced with brand new original (NOS) factory pieces. This includes: BOTH Troll flaps, Castle Drawbridge top & bottom, and inside Castle floor decal.
- Castle Moat Ramp has been replaced with rare, hard-to-find original (NOS) ramp. Gorgeous day-one new look!
- Dragon wings replaced with rare, hard-to-find original (NOS) wings. Commonly broken (or missing) part on this game.
- Troll carriages welded and reinforced for added durability and reliability. Original, unmodified troll carriages had a tendency to crack and separate over time, but with reinforced welding, this problem is minimalized and reliability greatly increased.
- Brand new red flipper buttons installed on both sides of cabinet.
- Brand new Merlin gate installed in front of Merlin wizard kickout hole. Commonly broken or missing part.
- Score and instruction cards have both been reproduced for clean clear looks, and hard-laminated for durability, and to prevent against damage in the future- these look great!
- Technical info chart in main cabinet has been removed, and replaced with new chart, fully hard-laminated for durability and to protect against damage in the future (original chart was simply a plain piece of paper- new chart is hard-laminated and won't tear, discolor, or stain).
- Both slingshot bumper assemblies fully removed, disassembled, cleaned, rebuilt, and adjusted. Detector switches on both bumpers removed and hand-cleaned with tarnish remover for nice bright brass shine!
- Inside and outside of main cabinet and backbox completely stripped of parts, cleaned, parts individually hand cleaned, and reassembled.
- Coin door completely removed and 100% disassembled. All parts (including wiring harness and switches) individually cleaned and detailed by hand and reassembled. Coin door metal parts professionally repainted and refinished for that brand new "day one" look! Fully working quarter coin mechanisms installed in coin door and tested for proper operation/adjustment.

  | Playfield- fully assembled (left), and stripped-down during restoration (right). |
 | View of lower playfield area- flippers, slingshot bumpers. Note protective metal fender washers under top and bottom edges of slingshot bumper plastics, to prevent damage/chipping. |
 | The Castle! Note brand new original (NOS) green Moat ramp installed, as well as NOS drawbridge and decals. Also brand new custom stainless-steel protector across the front of the exposed wood of the playfield, in front of castle. Protector has laser-etched "cobble stone" pattern in it to match castle look. This protector preserves the exposed wood edge of the playfield in front of the castle, to prevent wear/tear from the balls. Also protects the bottom "hinge" part of the drawbridge, which is usually smashed on most used Medieval Madness games. Also serves to absorb energy from balls shot when drawbridge is up, which lowers the risk of damage to the green moat ramp from flying balls. |
 | TROLLS!
These guys pop up in front of the castle to block your shots! Shoot a troll to knock him back down! Note both Troll assemblies are fully restored, including reinforced welding to the mechanisms under the playfield to add durability and longevity to the units. Also brand new factory original (NOS) decals applied to the "flaps" on top of each Troll for that fresh "day one" new look! |
 | Brand new special reinforced yellow standup targets installed in front of Castle entrance. These targets have a heavy-duty bracket on the back that helps prevent bending back of the target assembly over time, which reduces the potential for damage to these, and other valuable playfield components. |

 | Backbox custom modification: Remote-mount battery holder installed which gets the three "AA" batteries off the valuable MPU board, and relocates them "off-board", and prevents potential damage to the MPU board, should the batteries ever be neglected to the point where they burst and leak (common problem in all pinball machines from 1977 to present).
Quick-disconnect connector allows battery pack to be disconnected, should MPU board ever need to be removed from the game.
We also include two battery "tags" inside the main cabinet, and in backbox (shown in image at left) which indicate the last date that the batteries were changed, and how/when to change them in the future. |
Like all pinballs we sell, this machine also comes complete with instruction/operation manual and schematics, and fully functional coin door with all parts present and working.
