Game Description:

Pole Position II is a vintage arcade classic video game from legendary game manufacturer, Atari, and was produced in the early 1980's at the height of pinball and video game arcade popularity. The original Pole Position and it's successor, Pole Position II were two of Atari's most successful and popular video games, and still remain popular among collectors and enthusiasts today. Pole Position II is much the same game as regular Pole Position, but features FOUR racetracks instead of just one, faster cars, and a few enhanced sounds and many new graphics.

Select one of four challenging race courses to race your car. Qualify during the first lap and race for one of eight start positions for the full race- from "Pole Position" (1st place) to 8th place.

Race four laps to complete the full race and if you finish, you can add your name/initials and your time to the high score list. Top scoring drivers can also add their name/initials even if the full race isn't completed. Each of the 4 racetracks in Pole Position II has it's own separate high score list!

Race among other cars and avoid water slicks and road signs. Shift gears from low to high as you race- speeding up on the straight-aways, and slowing down on the curves. Navigate through long sweeping curves and tight hairpin turns. Beginners can test their skills on the "Test" raceway- a basic "oval" track which is easy to navigate. More skilled drivers can move up to the classic "Fuji" raceway, and on to the more challenging "Suzuka" and "Seaside" tracks.

Game Condition Details:

This particular Pole Position II game is in overall good condition and works great. It is being offered in working condition, as-is, unrestored, and sale is final. This game, in it's current condition, can be used and enjoyed without doing any work to it, or the discriminating hobbiest or collector may wish to use it as a great candidate for a full restoration.

This game has had a brand new 19-inch color RGB monitor installed in it recently, so it has a crisp, colorful picture with no washed-out colors or wavy lines. The replacement monitor put in this game is the original style, which is no longer being made, so they are very hard to find anymore, and can be very expensive if you can- all other replacements now are flat-screen panels- CRT tubes are no longer available in the original 19-inch size.

This game was originally a dedicated Pole Position game, and appears to have been converted to a Pole Position II at some point during it's lifetime (Atari produced Pole Position II in both dedicated games, and "kit" form, to upgrade original Pole Position I games). The game features Pole Position II graphic decals on both sides, and on the back. Pieces of the replacement decals have been chipped/peeled off in some areas over the years from use and wear/tear out in the arcades. The left side is better than the right side on this particular game. Cabinet has a few other nicks/dings from average use over the years- see images below for details.

The cockpit model includes a tinted plexiglass "window" on the back of the game so other players can view the action through the cabinet. This window is intact and in great condition on this particular game. Seat on the inside is in great shape with no damage. Floor panel has one "heel" wear spot in front of the pedals. Control panel is in excellent condition, and is original. Steering wheel and gearshift controls are in excellent shape and fully working.

Pole Position II includes both brake and accelerator pedals (Pole Position I included only an accelerator pedal). The brake pedal on this game does not appear to function during game play- it registers in the test/diagnostics and seems to be working fine in that mode, but for some reason does not function during game play mode. We have tried two different board sets in this game and the brake pedal does not function with either board set. It is unknown if there is a problem with software, PC boards, or in the wiring of the game that is causing the brake pedal to not function, but it does not interfere with game play- rest of game functions fine.

Coin door and cash box door are present and a "free play" button has been installed on the coin door to operate the game without coins.

When we acquired this game, the two main circuit boards that came with it were replaced with a set from another Pole Position II game that were in healthier condition. One of the sound boards was not working, so was also replaced.

Minor Issues Related to This Original Game:
Aside from the newly-installed monitor (TV picture tube) this game is essentially original inside and out, and approximately 28 years old at this point (made in 1983). It is in original condition and has not been overhauled or restored. As with any older used vintage arcade game, some minor operational problems may come up periodically and should be considered an inherent part of owning and operating an older used game such as this one. Interested buyers are asked to carefully consider the responsibility of owning an using an older vintage game like this, and that periodic problems or maintenance are an essential part to operating a game like this as time continues on.

In the time we have owned and operated this game, we have had the following minor issues occur periodically:
  • PC board connector problems: The PC boards and cable harness connectors in this game are original and can be a common source of minor issues with most Atari games, including this one. Interested buyers should be aware that the connectors for the PC boards in the back of the game may need periodic cleaning or removal/reseating to clean up any oxidation that can develop on the connectors periodically. Most non-operational issues in games like this can be attributed to connector problems such as this.
  • Some minor scrambled graphics: For a short time, a few small graphics near the middle of the screen appeared "scrambled". We were unable to remedy this with cleaning and reseating PC board connectors, but the problem soon went away and has not returned.
Game is being sold in condition described herein and customers should be aware that the above minor issues may occur periodically due to the originality of this vintage, unrestored game.
