TRIVIA: Four pinballs with the title "Star Trek" have been produced since the early 1970's. The latter three were based on the actual Star Trek TV series and/or films, but the first (made by Gottlieb), while it carried the show's title, had nothing to do with the show at all, but was a generic "science fiction" theme.

Game Description:

This Star Trek pinball was created and released to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the "Star Trek" TV series which began in 1967. The art, themes, speech, sounds, and play in this game reflect on many of the show's classic episodes and game play is narrated by James Doohan, who played "Scotty" in the TV shows and motion pictures.

The design of this game makes for really fun play. Not too tough for the novice player, but progressively challenging for the more experienced player. Two qualities not found in most pinball games- and something that definitely always keeps you coming back for another game!

Play your way around the galaxy trying to collect Dilithium Crystals, used to fuel the Enterprise star ship. Collect all 9 crystals by shooting and completing the different targets, ramps, and shots on the playfield. Gather all crystals and shoot the center "swinging target" to raise the "Transporter" ramp for a shot to start wild 3-ball multiball play! Shoot the swinging target again during multiball mode for a timed shot into the Transporter for Jackpot points! Not as easy as it may sound!

This game features a host of fun action-packed playfield and game gadgets, including an auto ball-launcher, two ramps, three pop bumpers, a moving "swinging target" in the center of the playfield, a ramp that raises and lowers, two banks of drop targets, three "scoop" shots, and much more! Star Trek 25th is also one of only a few games to feature "backbox animation"- a gadget in the backbox that moves with gameplay. In Star Trek, this is a 3D "hologram" type device showing the Enterprise crew in the famous "Transporter" on the ship. Watch as the crew are slowly "transported" and disappear/reappear right before your eyes!

Star Trek: 25th Anniversary Edition also features the original Star Trek theme music and narration by actor James Doohan ("Scotty") and quotes from DeForrest Kelly ("Dr. McCoy") from the TV show and motion pictures.

Star Trek: 25th Anniversary Edition is not only a great game for Star Trek fans and memorabilia collectors, but is designed to be a great game for hard-core pinball players and casual players alike. While this game packs a big punch in the number of playfield gadgets and rules/modes in it's gameplay, it's still designed to be fun and straightforward enough to be entertaining for any players, regardless of skill and age. Not too much to overwhelm the novice player, but plenty to keep you challenged and always coming back for more! After one game on this machine, we think you'll agree!

Game Condition Details:

This game is in overall excellent shape for a used commercial pinball machine- we rate it as an "Excellent Condition" rating, which is near our top rating for a used, reconditioned game.

Playfield on this game is in great shape overall, with only a few signs of use from play over the years. Very well preserved. Playfield finish and artwork have a nice smooth glossy shine/finish to them, giving a very fresh, new-looking appearance to most of the playfield.

Plastics on the playfield are all present and in very good condition. The lower tip on the left slingshot bumper plastic has been chipped off (small chip) at some time in the game's past but isn't very obvious and doesn't detract from game play. We've replaced a few broken plastics on this game during the restoration but despite our best efforts, have not been able to find "perfect" replacements for all the ones we'd like to replace (plastics and most game-specific parts for this game have been discontinued for many years). But plastics and other playfield parts are really in great shape on this machine.

Ramps on this game (actually all the ramps are part of one BIG ramp) are in great shape. There have been a few small chips out of the clear plastic at the ends (exit) of the two return ramps (behind the slingshot bumpers) but the metal protectors mounted in the ends of the ramp help protect and cover these- not unsightly or obvious. Ramps also have the unique blue "chase light" tubes that run down the sides of the ramp at the top/center. These are usually missing or non-functional on most Star Trek games, but we've restored and repaired these devices so they work properly during game play. We've also customized and upgraded the chase lights on this game so that they use LED lights instead of the original incandescant mini lamps. LEDs will last indefinitely and not require replacement like incandescant lamps do, and they run much cooler and have less "load" on the game's electronics. Both of these aspects will help these lights work better, longer, and add to the game's overall reliability.

Cabinet on this game is very clean and in overall great shape. Main (lower) cabinet has really been preserved well over the years with hardly any signs of use. Only a few small scuffs and nicks have been cleaned up or touched-up on the main cabinet sides and front on this game. Back of main cabinet has had old decals/stickers removed and repainted with gloss black enamel paint for fresh new look, and new white nylon gliders have been installed to restore original design.

Backbox sides have gathered a few small scuffs and other superficial blemishes from normal use over the years. Some packing tape had apparently been wrapped around the backbox at some time in the game's past (probably when being moved) which took some small flecks of paint off of the sides of the backbox- most notably on the right side over the "Star Trek" words (see images below). Not very apparent, but mentioned here for accuracy and completeness.

Edges on the backbox sides have had a few nicks and scratches, most of which were touched up and repainted with gloss black paint to give the backbox a better, more clean appearance. Front of backbox edges and interior surrounding backglass and speaker panel have been repainted with gloss black enamel paint for a fresh "day one" look.

Back of backbox has had old decals/stickers removed and repainted with gloss black enamel paint for new fresh look.

Front of game had a security hasp installed on the right edge of coin door at some time in the past. This has been removed, and the holes left behind have been filled with black carriage bolts for a fresh "factory" type look.

Translite (backglass) on this game is in good shape and has only a few small scuffs on back side from normal use over the years. Most notable is a scuff over Mr. Spock's upper lip- right side. But this blemish blends in with the shading on his face so isn't very noticeable. Backglass glass and mylar translite have both been removed, cleaned with
Novus #1 plastic cleaner/polish and anti-static spray. A new black plastic "lift channel" molding piece has been installed on the bottom edge of the backglass.

Score display on this game appears to have been possibly replaced shortly after the game was made in late 1991. It still has a bright crisp look to it with no signs of fading or burning-out "dots". Interested buyers should be aware that the display in this game is an older obsolete unit that only 5 or 6 Data East games used at the time this game was made- a 128 x 16 dot matrix display. These are no longer being made, so when the score display unit eventually starts to go bad and burn out (these are "perishable" items that typically need to be replaced every 10 years or so), it may be difficult to find a replacement unit. An aftermarket display unit is currently being made for these games by PinLED and runs about $300. This is a complete replacement unit that features LEDs for the dot matrix, rather than the original gas plasma display. The LED unit will last indefinitely (does not "burn out") but is a rather expensive item to replace. The display in this game is very healthy at

Here is a detailed list of work that has been done on this game, followed by more details on parts and game modifications:
  • We have invested just over 55 hours of work in the restoration of this game.
  • Playfield top and bottom surfaces stripped of parts and assemblies for proper cleaning- right down to the bare wood and paint. Playfield surface hand cleaned, hand polished, and hand waxed with top-quality Carnauba wax.
  • All playfield parts have been removed and hand cleaned, or replaced with brand new parts where necessary. This includes light bulbs, posts, ramps, wireform ball guides, flipper assemblies, kickout scoop assembly, drop target banks, standup targets, bumper assemblies, lamp PC boards, ball trough and associated parts, and any other parts that are installed on the playfield.
  • All metal parts removed from playfield have been hand cleaned, polished, and stainless steel ball guide rails and ramp protectors have been refinished with our proprietary in-house process to remove ball marks and restore original bright "brand new" shiny look.
  • All ramps have been completely removed and fully disassembled into all of their individual parts and components for thorough reconditioning and proper cleaning. Ramps cleaned, polished, and all associated hardware and accessory parts cleaned, polished, and reassembled.
  • All playfield plastic and metal posts removed and cleaned by hand with detergent and brush to remove any wax, dirt, grime, or leftover cleaner. They once again look like new!
  • Both flipper assemblies on this game have been completely removed, 100% disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt with brand new replacement parts, and reassembled. Flippers tuned and adjusted for optimum performance and reliability.
  • Flipper assemblies custom-modified/upgraded to use modern-day side-mount return springs. This does away with the original old-style coil springs used over the coil plunger, which were very problematic and caused binding and loss-of-power problems with flippers in these games. New side-mount spring design should make for a better flip, and added reliability for years to come.
  • New white flipper bats and shafts installed for both flippers.
  • New ball auto-launch assembly custom-installed. This is a new modern Stern Pinball assembly which replaces the old troublesome Data East design. Much more heavy-duty and should provide trouble-free operation for decades to come.
  • New nylock nuts installed on plastics and posts on playfield. These replace old dirty faded nuts and give a nice "new" look to the playfield and parts.
  • New standup targets installed in center of playfield to replace both original stationary targets and the single "swinging target" in center. These now work and look like new again!
  • New nylon coil sleeves installed in coil devices- pop bumpers, slingshot bumpers, etc., for increased performance.
  • New metal and fiber links installed on all 3 pop bumpers for added performance and reliability.
  • Complete new rubber ring kit installed on playfield.
  • All light bulbs on top and bottom of playfield, and elsewhere in game, removed, cleaned, and replaced. Brand new light bulbs used as replacements for old worn, discolored, or burned out bulbs and flasher bulbs.
  • All light bulb inserts (or "lenses") in playfield surface cleaned for maximum shine and light penetration.
  • Brand new chrome steel pinballs installed in game (game uses 3 total).
  • Playfield flat plastics (screened artwork) all removed, cleaned, polished, and reinstalled. Cracked or broken pieces replaced with better-condition pieces, where needed or where replacements were available.
  • Fender washers installed under top and bottom edges of slingshot bumper plastics, to protect them from wear/tear from airborne balls.
  • Standup targets in center of playfield have been replaced with brand new units.
  • All drop targets on playfield have been replaced with brand new original NOS Data East white targets and a brand new drop target decal set to restore them to brand new "day one" condition.
  • Score and instruction cards have both been reproduced for clean clear looks, and hard-laminated for durability, and to prevent against damage in the future- these look great!
  • Inside and outside of main cabinet and backbox completely stripped of parts, cleaned, parts individually hand cleaned, and reassembled.
  • Coin door completely removed and 100% disassembled. All parts (including wiring harness and switches) individually cleaned and detailed by hand and reassembled. Coin door metal parts professionally repainted and refinished for that brand new "day one" look! Brand new fully working quarter coin mechanisms installed in coin door and tested for proper operation/adjustment.
  • Carriage bolts repainted on front of game for ball shooter button mounting and coin door frame mounting- original fresh look is restored with this finishing touch.
  • Playfield glass replaced with brand new scratch-free sheet of tempered safety glass.
  • Playfield glass lockdown bar and latch assembly completely removed, cleaned, painted, and reassembled.
  • Brand new heavy-duty leg levelers and bolts installed on game- all four corners.
  • Brand new cabinet leg protector pads installed under new legs for added good looks and protection against wear/tear to the cabinet corners.
  • Cabinet nicks and scratches touched up, and repainted, where possible/necessary.
  • Solder joints on light bulb PC boards under playfield all reflowed and reinforced with fresh solder. This repairs hairline cracks in the original solder joints that develop from vibration over the years, preventing intermittent connection/operation problems and adds increased reliability for years to come.
  • All electronics (PC boards) in backbox checked and tested for proper operation and good looks (no burned connectors, etc.) Fuses all removed, checked, and proper values verified- replaced where necessary.
  • Battery holder on MPU board in backbox has been removed and a new remote-mount battery holder kit has been installed. This gets the batteries off of the valuable board and eliminates the possibility for damage to the board should the batteries ever go neglected and burst/leak, which can irrepairably damage valuable circuit boards. Batteries have been replaced with fresh high-quality "Energizer" batteries. These keep the game's high scores and other settings/adjustments in memory when the power is turned off and should be replaced every 2 years to remain fresh and prevent resetting and loss of memory.
  • Backglass glass and translite removed, cleaned, and reassembled. New plastic "lift channel" installed on lower edge of glass.
  • New white nylon gliders installed on back of main cabinet for fresh new look.
Partial List of New Parts on This Game:
NOTE: ("NOS" means "New Old Stock", and indicates a part that is of original manufacture, new (never used), and authentic (not a reproduction, look-alike, or "aftermarket" part). Most "NOS" parts are discontinued and no longer available from the manufacturer, and can consequently be very hard to find, or expensive if they can be found.)
  • ($34.00 value) NOS partsgen.htm drop targets and brand new drop target decals installed in both drop target banks in this game (8 targets/decals total).
  • ($5 value) New nylon coil sleeves installed in bumpers and flippers throughout playfield.
  • ($9.30 value) New pop bumper metal and fiber linkages installed on all 3 pop bumpers.
  • ($5 value) New flipper side-mount return springs and supporting hardware installed on both flippers to upgrade them to modern, more reliable design.
  • ($7 value) New white flipper bats with shaft installed for both flippers.
  • ($35 value) New modern Stern Pinball auto-ball-launcher assembly custom-fitted and installed. This replaces the old worn-out troublesome original auto-launcher device which was always the source of many problems in older Data East games. New assembly should provide reliability and better performance for decades to come.
  • ($30 value) New standup targets installed in center of playfield, replacing original white stationary targets and the "swinging target".
  • ($20 value) New light bulbs on playfield, under playfield, coin door, and in backbox (both regular, and "flasher" bulbs).
  • ($6 value) New chrome steel pin balls (game uses 3 balls total)
  • ($4 value) New chrome nylock nuts installed on playfield posts/plastics.
  • ($1 value) New zinc-plated ramp entrance screws installed on all stainless and spring steel ramp entrance flaps on playfield.
  • ($7.50 value) New remote-mount battery holder and long-life batteries custom installed in remote-mount battery holder in backbox for game's memory-retention.
  • ($8.00 value) New price and instruction cards- hard-laminated for great looks and protection.
  • ($8.00 value) New heavy-duty leg levelers, and leveler nuts installed on all four legs.
  • ($12.00 value) New cabinet leg protector pads installed on all for new legs to protect cabinet surface from wear/tear damage from mounted legs.
  • ($5.00 value) New coin door lock, and keys.
  • ($2.25 value) New white nylon gliders installed on "skids" on back side of game.
  • ($40.00 value) New updated game ROM chip software for MPU and display boards (latest release).
  • ($13.00 value) New rubber ring kit installed on playfield, including all round rings, post bumpers, and flipper rubber rings.
  • ($45.00 value) New sheet of scratch-free clear tempered safety glass installed on playfield.
Custom Modifications:
  • Both flippers upgraded to modern-day side-mount return spring design. This eliminates the old coil springs that went around the coil plunger, which were the cause of many problems with binding and lost power with flippers.
  • New modern Stern Pinball ball auto-launcher mechanism custom fitted and installed to replace old worn out problematic original Data East design. Much more durable and reliable than original unit and should provide better performance for decades to come.
  • Protective fender washers added under top and bottom edges of slingshot plastics to protect against wear/tear and damage.
  • Score/instruction cards reproduced and hard-laminated for best look and protection.
  • Remote-mount battery holder with quick-disconnect installed for MPU board in backbox.
  • Game has had it's software (game and display) updated to latest available revisions.
  • The blue "chase light" tubes on the sides of the main ramp on this game have had their old original incandescant mini-lamps removed and replaced with new modern LEDs and new wiring and electronics. LEDs will last indefinitely and not require replacement like incandescant lamps do. They also run cooler and put less draw on the game's electronics- both of which will help extend the game's life and reliability.

Description
Playfield- restoration complete and fully reassembled.
Lower playfield detail- slingshot bumpers and flippers area. Note brand new hard-laminated score/instruction and pricing cards installed on the lower apron.
Left side of playfield detail. Left "STAR" drop target bank. All 8 drop targets on this game are brand new with brand new target decals installed. Note the excellent finish on the playfield on this game- outstanding.

Some of the center round standup targets are visible in this shot, too- all three (two outer stationary targets and the one "swinging" target) have all been replaced with brand new units.
Right side playfield detail- right drop target bank and kickout-scoop hole. A small amount of normal playfield wear on the front and left side edges of the kickout scoop hole is present on this game, but far below-average for a game of this age and popularity.
Center playfield detail. This is the center scoop shot with moving (yellow) target that swings back and forth. Panel on top lights up each of the 9 Dilithium Crystals as they're collected. Get all 9 and start 3-ball multiball play! Note the brand new yellow and white standup targets installed here.

Return ramps are visible here. Note the original blue "chase light" tubes that have been restored to fully working condition. We have also customized the chase light tubes on this game by replacing the old original incandescant mini lamps inside with modern LEDs which will last indefinitely and not require replacement like incandescant lamps will. The LEDs also run cooler and put less draw on the game's electronics, which helps to add to the overall reliability of the game.
Upper playfield area- top rollover lanes, pop bumpers, and ramps.
Under-playfield view- top portion of playfield. All 3 of the yellow pop bumper assemblies here have been completely removed, disassembled into all individual parts, hand-cleaned, rebuilt, and reassembled for "day one" new look and operation. Switches adjusted and tuned for best bumper performance.

Note also the cleanliness of the under-playfield clear ramp that collects balls from the 3 holes and returns them to the scoop kickout. Most under-playfield ramps are "black as soot" from neglect over the years and very few pinball dealers will bother to spend all the time required to remove and clean these. Without cleaning the under-playfield ramps, all the dirt from these will quickly find it's way back up on to the playfield and quickly dirty-up and cleaning work or new parts that have been installed. Again, no stone left unturned here- top or bottom side of playfield.
Underside of playfield- lower playfield section. Note the cleanliness of the underside of the playfield wood here. A lot of time was spent restoring even the bottom of the playfield in this game so everything could be as good as new. Flipper assemblies on this game have been fully rebuilt with new parts and have also been custom modified to use modern side-mount flipper return springs. These springs make for a more "crisp" flip, and avoid problems with binding and loss of power from the older tapered coil plunger design that was very problematic.

Note also that a new modern Stern auto-launcher mechanism has been installed on this game, replacing the old worn-out and troublesome Data East unit. Original mechanisms in these games just didn't hold up well due to weak design and were always needing repair and adjustment. This new heavy-duty modern Stern Pinball unit should provide trouble-free operation for decades to come.

Description
Game overall view.
Cabinet- left side. Both sides on the main cabinet on this game are really in outstanding shape. Only a few tiny nicks and scuffs have found their way onto the cabinet over the years but most have been cleaned up or done away with and the whole main cabinet has a great overall fresh appearance to it- really nice shape.
Cabinet- right side.
Front of game, coin door. Coin door has been completely disassembled into all individual parts, removed, parts cleaned/restored, and black metal/plastic exterior parts fully repainted for "day one" new look, then whole door is reassembled. Just like new again inside and out!

Red ball launch button assembly has been removed and restored as well with black housing and carriage bolts cleaned and repainted and button assembly cleaned inside and out, and reassembled.

A security hasp was installed on the door on this game at some point in the past but has been removed and holes left behind have been filled with black carriage bolts for a nice smooth "factory" look.
Interior of coin door- fully restored and reassembled. 25¢ coin mechanisms are present, included, and working, so game can be run on coins or "free play" depending on customer's preference. Brand new black plastic coin box has been installed in this game and original metal lid cleaned and installed. All wiring harnesses have also been removed here and cleaned/replaced with new nylon tie-wraps to secure them to door.

Very few pinball dealers would bother to do anything with the coin door on a game, but here, too, we leave no stone unturned in our pinball restorations.
Cabinet interior- fully restored and reassembled.
Rear of game. Worn decals have been removed from back of game and backbox and main cabinet portions have been repainted with gloss black enamel to restore "new" look. Brand new white nylon gliders have been installed on the back of the main cabinet to replace worn originals. A brand new backbox lock wrench is included with the game (shown in image). This is used to lock/secure the backbox in the upright (raised) position.
Backbox left side. As with any used game, a few chips and nicks have found their way onto the backbox sides over the years, but still in overall good shape. Outer edges have been touched-up/repainted with gloss black paint for a cleaner fresher look.
Backbox right side. Some touch-up/repainting has been done around the perimiter edges on this side of the backbox as well. A previous owner allowed some packing tape to be put around the backbox (possibly during moving of the game) which took a little bit of the paint off across the "Star Trek" wording on this side of the game. Other nicks/scuffs have been touched up and repainted for a better appearance. Overall good shape.
Backglass front view. Translite (backglass artwork) in this game is in very good condition. Has only had a few small nicks and scuffs from normal use and wear/tear over the years. Most notable is probably a scuff on the right upper lip on Mr. Spock, but blends in with the shading on his face so doesn't really appear obvious.

Display is clean and bright. The animated "hologram" Transporter unit in the backbox is fully complete and working. Watch as the crew transport and disappear right before your eyes!

Backbox front and interior edges have been repainted with gloss black enamel for a fresh new appearance.

Like all pinballs we sell, this machine also comes complete with instruction/operation manual and schematics, and fully functional coin door with all parts present and working. For our local customers, this game also includes
delivery, setup, and a full warranty on parts and labor, at no additional charge. For out-of-town customers, we offer our Limited Warranty.
