Game Description:
Strikes and Spares was one of the first pinball games produced by Bally pinball in the late 1970's when pinball was making it's transition to electronic functionality, replacing the electro-mechanical design that was used for decades prior. Solid-state electronics brought a whole new level of reliability and decreased maintenance to pinball and coin-op games in general, and Strikes and Spares is a classic example of that golden era in pinball history.
One of the more popular games of its time, Strikes and Spares often got heavy play out in the arcades and it's very difficult to find a Strikes and Spares game that's still in really good condition. We're proud to offer this classic Strikes and Spares game- reconditioned and overhauled for great looks, fast fun play, and reliability- and sure to entertain for many more years to come!
Designed with a popular bowling theme, Strikes and Spares brings you all the fun and excitement of your local bowling alley. Roll over the "star" buttons in the center of the playfield to "knock down" pins. Complete rollovers at the top to collect spares and advance your scorecard toward a "special" (free replay, or extra ball). Make the center rollover lane when lit to collect a strike!
This game also features three fast-action pop bumpers, spinner, saucer, and standup targets, fast slingshot bumpers, and lively flippers- all making for fast, fun play that will take you back to the bowling alley- and arcade- of years past. Great colors and classic Bally pinball artwork adorn the playfield and backglass and really make for a great, fun, pinball experience- for beginners and experts alike. Enough to really challenge the best of players, but still straightforward enough, and fun, for novice and "newbie" players alike. After a game or two, we think you'll agree!
Main Cabinet: Main cabinet is in very good condition all around. A few chips and scratches were present when we acquired this game, most of which have been touched-up during the overhaul. The back of the main cabinet has been fully repainted in matching yellow enamel, and new white nylon gliders installed to replace worn original gliders. Cabinet "neck", which backbox mounts on, was also repainted in original semi-gloss black enamel for a fresh clean look. New leg protector pads have been installed under each leg to help protect against wear/tear on the cabinet. Legs have been touch-up-painted with matching charcoal metallic enamel paint, and have new leg levelers and nuts installed.
Coin door has been fully removed, disassembled, all parts cleaned and restored, and reassembled for like-new look and operation. Door includes fully functional 25¢ coin mechanisms, so game can be operated by coins, if desired (game can also be set up for "free play" as well).
Custom Modifications:
Remote-mount battery holder for MPU board added in backbox. Includes quick-disconnect for easy MPU board removal from the game, if ever needed.
Solenoid/regulator board upgraded for more reliable operation, and new heavy-duty power filter capacitor added for more reliable, cleaner power.
New set of cabinet leg protector pads added under legs to protect game finish from unnecessary scatches and scrapes.
Playfield- overall view. Overhaul complete and fully reassembled.
Detail- lower playfield and flippers area.
Detail- lower playfield/flippers area- seen from right. One wear spot was touched-up in front of the left slingshot bumper, and both slingshot bumpers have had protective Mylar pieces installed in front of them to help prevent wear/tear in the future.
Detail- right side of playfield. S-P-A-R-E standup targets seen here.
Detail- left side of playfield- left standup target and spinner lane entrance. Spinner target has had a brand new decal installed on it. Note the cleanliness of the white "star" rollover buttons in the center of playfield- all 10 of these were carefully removed, cleaned by hand, reinstalled, and adjusted for proper operation. Some minor wear spots are present in front of the center pop bumper above the star rollovers.
Upper playfield- pop bumpers and top rollover lanes. Kickout saucer at right had one wear spot in front of it that was touched-up, and some protective Mylar installed over it to help prevent wear/tear in the future. Pop bumper caps are original to this game and in great shape, as are the 4 red rollover lane guides at the top.
Note the brand new white nylon cap nuts that have been installed on the plastics to keep them in place- a nice finishing touch!

Metal cabinet side-rails and front lockdown bar have been cleaned/polished for a nice clean, smooth finish. Flipper buttons and housings have been removed, cleaned, and reinstalled.

Main cabinet- front, and coin door. Coin door has been fully removed, disassembled into all individual parts, all parts cleaned and repainted where necessary, and reassembled. It once again has a like-new look and is clean inside and out. Door has fully working 25¢ coin mechanisms, so game can be run on coins if desired (can also be set up for "free play"). A new lock and keys have been installed.

Backbox- front view. Backglass on this game is original and in near-mint condition. Displays have all been gone through and are fully working and in great shape.
Backglass- rear view. Backglass on this game is original and is in near-mint condition. Rarely do we see a glass from a vintage game such as this one that's been preserved this well. No signs of scratches, chips, or flaking/lifting ink from moisture damage- very well preserved. An absolutely gorgeous glass.
Backbox- left side. Front "surround" on the backbox has been repainted in matching yellow enamel for a fresh, clean look. Some minor touch-up has been done on the sides to fix some minor chips/scratches from past use. Top and back of backbox have also been repainted in matching yellow enamel.
Backbox- right side.
Backbox interior. All circuit boards and score displays have been removed and had solder reflowed on the backs of all connector pins. This repairs cracks in the original solder joints which can cause intermittent connections and operation failures. All connector pins have also had DeoxIt anti-oxidant compound applied to them which not only helps prevent oxidation problems that cause bad connections, but lubricates the connector pins and makes removal/installation of connectors much easier, and helps cut down on stress/strain on connectors and the PC boards themselves.
Note remote-mount memory backup battery kit that has been installed for the MPU board. Remote kit gets the batteries off the valuable MPU board so that they won't damage the board if they go neglected and leak. Some minor battery damage is present along the bottom edge of the original MPU board in this game, from a past battery that was on-board, and leaked, but the leakage hasn't damaged any components and is isolated along the bottom edge of the board. Board is in otherwise great shape and fully working.
Solenoid/regulator board has had a new power filter capacitor installed for more healthy, reliable power. It has also had two critical upgrade modifications done to it for more reliable power and connections. All of this work helps improve the health of the power supply circuits and helps eliminate common issues that many of these games have when they are original/untouched, including mid-game reset issues and game "lock ups". Most original/untouched Bally games will suffer from these symptoms, but the new parts and modifications we do as part of our overhaul on these classic games helps eliminate these pesky issues.
Like all pinballs we sell, this machine also comes complete with instruction/operation manual and schematics, and fully functional coin door with all parts present and working. For our local customers, this game also includes delivery, setup, and a full warranty on parts and labor, at no additional charge. For out-of-town customers, we offer our limited warranty.
