TRIVIA: Twilight Zone is arguably the one game that has the most "gadgets" and "doo-dads" packed into it's design, and features a wide-body playfield layout to house all the fun "toys". It's the only game to feature "invisible" flippers on it's mini playfield (magnets under the playfield controlled by the player), and a ceramic ball called the Powerball, about 20% lighter than the steel balls in the game, which cannot be influenced by the playfield magnets.

Game Description:
Twilight Zone, inspired by the hit pop-culture television series of the same name, was produced in 1993 during what many consider to be the last "golden era" of pinball. It was manufactured by Bally, part of Williams Electronics Games and shared fame with many other hugely-popular games of it's time, including Addams Family, Creature From the Black Lagoon, Funhouse, Indiana Jones, and still remains one of the top most-popular games of all time, even today. Twilight Zone is the game that we as a dealer get the most frequent requests for, and is considered one of the top titles among collectors, and players alike.
Designed by the legendary Pat Lawlor who also brought us such hits as Addams Family Funhouse, Earthshaker, Monopoly, Whirlwind, and Safe Cracker (to name a few), this game packs a punch in fun with it's wide-body playfield layout (about 3 inches wider than standard games) that allows for a lot more gadgets and "doo-dads" on the playfield. This game features FOUR flippers, two ramps, several electronically-controlled playfield magnets, a second "upper" playfield level, three pop bumpers, several multiball modes (play up to SIX balls at a time!), a host of different "modes" of play, and some great fully-working gadgets like a gumball machine that moves balls through it, and a real working clock that is used during several modes of the game, but also keeps the correct time-of-day when the game isn't being played.
Twilight Zone also features a ceramic pin ball in it's play (the "Power Ball") which is about 20% lighter than the other steel pin balls used in the game. As a non-steel ball, it is unaffected by the magnets on the playfield, so behaves differently when it is in play, and gives a rather unique experience to the game's play. A couple of modes built into the game utilize the Power Ball for different scoring and award features.
The main object of Twilight Zone is to try to complete all the "modes" shown on the "Door Panel" in the center of the playfield. Those good enough to do this are awarded with the game's "Wizard Mode", called "Lost in the Zone"- a mode that featues SIX-BALL multiball play! No easy feat- Twilight Zone is known as one of the most involved games (it's rulesheet alone is about 40 pages long!) and with all the gadgets and fun built into it, it will challenge even the best of players. Certainly a game you will not tire of quickly!
Several multiball modes are built into this game, with the main 3-ball mode being acheived by shooting both the left and right ramps, then locking 3 balls into the "Robot" lane at the top right of the playfield.
Recently returned to "like-new" condition, this game plays lightning-fast with strong, crisp flipper shots and fast bumper and ball action- everywhere on the playfield. Switches and bumpers are extremely responsive- after only one game on this machine you'll think you were back at the arcade in 1993 playing a brand new game again! There is no greater experience in pinball than playing a top-condition, exciting, fast-paced classic game like this one, and after a few plays on this one, we're sure you'll agree!
Game Condition Details:
NOTE: A large amount of detail/information is given below on the condition of this game, in regard to it's higher collectible value, and often-common multiple inquiries that we typically receive regarding intricate detail on "high end" popular games such as this one. We apologize in advance for the "extra reading" but want to convey as accurate a depiction of the game's details as possible for those discriminating customers who cannot visit our shop to see/play this game in person before buying. If you have any questions or require any additional information or pictures, just e-mail us.
Overall:
Over 60 hours have been invested in the excruciatingly-detailed restoration of this legendary classic Bally pinball game. It easily meets our criteria for a "Collector Condition" rating, which is our top rating for a used, reconditioned, restored game.
This particular game came to us on a trade-in from a local customer who used it lightly in private home use for the majority of it's lifetime, so it has been well cared-for and used sparingly during it's non-commercial life. When this game originally left the factory in Chicago, Illinois in July of 1993, it actually went to Germany, where it spent a few years in commercial use, clearly seeing very limited play, due to the apparent well-preserved condition inside and out. As part of the restoration on this game, we have "re-domesticated" this game with the standard U.S. parts that it was originally designed to use, including the necessary electrical conversions, and coin door set-up and associated hardware for use with U.S. quarters. All work was done to exacting factory standards so it looks and functions just like any domestic game that came off the factory assembly line at the Bally plant. There are no "hack jobs" to the wiring, power cord, coin door parts, or anything else in the game from the conversion, which are commonly seen in many "re-imported" games that are sold by other dealers. All of our work has been done exactly as the factory would have done it in 1993, as part of the detailed restoration.
During it's commercial and home use, this game clearly received far less than average use, as can easily be seen by the condition of the playfield, cabinet, and all of it's internal and external parts. The cleanliness of the game- inside and out- and the obvious signs of very limited use on the playfield and it's components had convinced us that this was truly a low-mileage game to begin with, so with it's parts and components in prime condition, was a great candidate for a high-end restoration of this caliber. Much like a very low-mileage classic muscle car, this game has been preserved extremely well inside and out due to the limited amount of use it received during it's lifetime. Something we all love to see in a classic game like this.
Cabinet and Backbox: The entire cabinet on this game (main cabinet and backbox) has been restored to brand new condition with new high-quality artwork decals professionally applied. Like many other games of the past decade, this game's original artwork suffered from some fading of it's original colors from exposure to sunlight (UV rays) over the years, so as part of the detailed restoration of this classic, the cabinet artwork was restored as well to complete it's "day one" new look. Simply gorgeous- this game literally looks like it just rolled off the factory assembly line- stunning inside and out.
Cabinet on this game has not been drilled for a security bar/hasp, as many commercial-use games have. Only a few minor superficial scratches and small chips were repaired on this game's original cabinet finish before it was restored with the new artwork.
The top and bottom sides of the backbox have been restored and refinished in original-style semi-gloss black enamel paint, as have the back sides of the backbox and main cabinet. Main cabinet interior sides have also been restored with a light coat of semi-gloss black paint to restore original finish. The bottom of the main cabinet has been restored as well- cleaning and sanding of the wood edges and bottom panel to restore the original appearance.
All cabinet hardware (carriage bolts, screws, brackets, etc) has been removed and cleaned, and refinished or repainted for original appearance. New white nylon cabinet gliders have been installed on the back of the main cabinet and underside edges of the backbox.
Brand new leg protector pads have also been supplied with this game to help prevent against any damage (scratches, scuffs) from the normal mounting of the metal legs on the corners of the main cabinet- this will help preserve the newly-restored finish.
Backglass on this game (mylar translite behind clear tempered glass) is in excellent condition and still has a like-new appearance. One tiny superficial scratch behind the gumball machine on the back of the translite is present, but one has to look fairly closely to find it (see images below). None of the common scuffs, scratches, or other damage from normal use are present on the translite on this game- very well preserved. Black plastic trim on the backglass edges is all original and in excellent condition with no damage.
Playfield on this game is in outstanding condition from top to bottom and has no worn spots in the artwork- very well preserved from top to bottom- one of the benefits of a very low-mileage game. It is an original playfield, and we can confidently say the best condition used playfield we have ever come across for a used Twilight Zone game. This game features the "Diamondplate" clearcoat finish which helps preserve and protect it's surface.
Most of the plastics on the playfield on this game are original and in excellent condition with no cracks or breaks and no unsightly wear spots or other damage. All have been cleaned- top and bottom sides- and installed and secured with brand new nylock nuts, just like originally designed. The Magna-Flip sign plastic and the plastic for the Slot Machine scoop have been replaced with new pieces- both originals having had some wear on them from past play.
All mechanisms on the playfield (including kickers, bumpers, flippers, and more) have all been painstakingly overhauled and reconditioned/restored to new condition for good looks and proper reliable operation.
Here is a detailed list of work that has been done on this game, followed by more details on parts and game modifications:

"Where's all the other mods and add-ons?"
There are literally dozens of "add-ons" and modification items produced by aftermarket (non-factory) and "home-made" sources for Twilight Zone, as well as many other games, but we usually don't deal with most of these- maybe just a few select custom items when we do a full restoration- depending on the mod and the game. We generally avoid mods and add-ons to most games for the following important reasons:
- Aftermarket add-ons and mods add to the time it takes to rebuild a game and to the overall costs involved (parts and labor), so can drive the final game price up over market value in many cases, depending on what's added on.
- Not everyone wants a game that is "pimped out" with all the add-on doo-dads, so they can be unnecessary or unwanted in many cases.
- Many aftermarket add-ons and mods that require integration into the game either electrically or mechanically will void the warranty on a game as they are changing the way it was originally designed to operate.
- We personally prefer in most cases to restore games to the original "factory" standards- we're sort of purists in many cases and feel these games were at their best the way the factory designed them.
So we often leave aftermarket "add ons" and mods up to the buyers of our games to acquire and install themselves, if, and as they so desire, after they've bought the game, with the understanding that many of these items may void the warranty on their game and pose additional maintenance/service requirements as time goes on.

Playfield:
Thumbnail (Click for larger view) | Description |
 | Playfield overall view. |
 | Playfield during restoration. Stripped-down, with reassembly just starting. Many more days of work to go from here! |
 | Detail- lower playfield area, flippers. |
 | Detail- shot across lower section of playfield to the left side. Note the restored finish on the brass switches on the slingshot bumpers. |
 | Detail- left upper flipper and Rocket Kicker. Note the restored finish on the stainless steel ball guides, or "rails", as above the flipper. Our restoration process removes the "ball marks" from these metal pieces and restors a "grain" to them, just like when new. |
 | Detail- pop bumper area. Aside from being fully rebuilt, each pop bumper has had a new skirt, body, and cap installed. Note that the lower (center) bumper on this game feature the correct color cap, as designed by the factory- a "light red", rather than a pure amber, which is very hard to find anymore. |
 | Detail- Slot Machine kickout scoop area. Plastic over scoop is brand new, and includes new lamp socket for bulb on top. Scoop itself has been reinforced with some extra welding to prevent it from breaking (common problem on Twilight Zone games) and to add strength and reliability.
Narrow yellow oblong standup target to the left of the scoop entrance is a brand new piece- a heavy-duty reinforced version of the original target. This reinforced version will withstand thousands of ball hits and resist bending back. Original targets on Twilight Zone games suffered from a lot of abuse and were prone to bending back over time, thus sending balls back up into the air after being hit. This heavy-duty target will avoid any such problems on this game in the future. |
 | Detail- ramp, diverter, and right "Spiral" orbit lane. Note the cleanliness of the restored parts in this area- even the wiring on the ramps. This area is commonly a "dirt trap" on Twilight Zone games, and on most used games it's nearly impossible to see down to the lower layer of parts in this area due to the dirt buildup. No such problems on this game!
Note the top of the magnet core/pole in the spiral in the lower lane here- refinished to remove any ball marks and shows a nice "day one" new look. |
 | Detail- upper right Spiral orbit lane. The only notable blemish on the playfield on this game appears to be a few minor superficial indentations in the wood in the solid red area at the top corner of this orbit lane (just above the top Spiral design). These marks are in the actual wood (under the red ink) and are most likely just a minor defect that was present in the wood that was used for this playfield. These marks are not obvious (they barely show up in the photo, and are pretty much buried under all the parts in the top corner of the playfield) and in no way interfere with game play, but are mentioned here for accuracy and detail. |
 | Detail- The Clock. Undoubtedly the most high-tech device on this game, the clock on this particular machine has been fully rebuilt and features some great new parts: a brand new Pinball Lizard PC board set with surface-mount white sunburst LEDs, and a crystal clear plastic clock housing. The new upgraded PC board set replaces the problematic original factory boards, which suffered from several design flaws and are probably the number 1 cause of problems in Twilight Zone games still in operation today. The new Lizard unit has several electronic upgrades to make the unit run better and more reliably, and uses LED lighting instead of hot incandescent lamps to not only give a really cool blue-ish white glow, but to essentially eliminate all heat inside from the lighting. This lets the electronics run cool and avoid getting "cooked" and eventually failing like the original parts did.
The cool crystal-clear clock housing replaces the foggy/opaque original part, and lets you see inside the cool workings of the clock without any obstruction to your view. Really a neat touch!
This clock actually keeps time and will display the current time-of-day when in attract mode (when game is not being played).
|
 | The "Powerfield"! This is the upper playfield on Twilight Zone. Balls that come here are sent by the right ramp. The player uses "invisible flippers" (electronically-controlled magnets, or "Magna-Flip") to propel the ball on this playfield, and the object here is to get the ball to the top exit of the field before the timer runs out!
Powerfield has been completely removed from the game and disassembled into all individual parts during restoration, so is essentially again in "new" condition throughout. |
 | Side view of mini playfield. Note the cleanliness of the playfield and parts as seen here. Wiring to the right rebound switch, top opto receiver, and yellow lamp socket have been cleaned up and housed in electronic shrink tubing for better, cleaner looks, and to protect against hits from errant airborne pinballs in this area.
The "Magna Flip" sign on the front right corner of the playfield has been replaced with a brand new piece and all scoring switches adjusted for proper operation and adjustment. |
 | The Gumball Machine: Upper left corner of playfield. This unit also has been fully rebuilt (no easy task!) This is a fully-working device that actually processes pin balls through it during play! The gumball machine takes balls shot up from underneath the playfield and typically stores 3 of them inside during play, each being fed back into play at certain points in the game. Watch as the yellow crank on the front actually turns as balls are rotated and come rolling out the bottom, back into play!
No parts missing here! Many Twilight Zone games are found to be missing the red Gumball Machine lid, or the clear guide/spacer that sits just inside the top. All parts are present, working, and in tip-top shape inthis unit on this game. |
 | Detail- top center of playfield- left and right ramp entrances. Again here, note the cleanliness of the parts. The clear plastic ramp and protective plastics mounted on top of it have all been cleaned and polished and allow for unobstructed views of not only the ramp and balls travelling on it, but the parts and lanes lying underneath. Commonly the dirtiest area on used Twilight Zone games, but you'll find no dust here!
Metal parts including ramp protectors and the metal right ramp itself have been cleaned and refinished using our own in-house proprietary process to remove ball marks and restore the "grain" of the metal- just like when new.
|
 | Detail- underside of playfield. Lower section of playfield seen here- lower flippers and all other mechanisms/devices under the playfield.
Everything you see here has been fully removed from this game and overhauled/reconditioned/replaced/restored and put back together again, to ensure cleanliness, proper adjustment and operation, and reliability.
No stone left unturned- not even under the playfield! |
 | Detail- underside of playfield. Upper right flipper assembly seen here, along with Slot Machine kickout scoop and portions of the under-playfield ramps. |
 | Detail- underside of playfield. Pop bumper mechanisms and upper left flipper assembly seen here.
Again here, note the cleanliness of the ramps- even under the playfield! Most dealers will never bother to remove and clean anything under the playfield- let alone ramps. But there's not point to cleaning the top side of the playfield if you don't clean the underside- any dirt left "underneath" will find it's way back up onto the top and quickly dirty up a "quickie" clean-up job!
No corners cut here- everything overhauled. |
 | Detail- underside of playfield. Upper left corner of playfield- under the Gumball Machine, and related components. |
 | Detail- underside of playfield. Divertor and up-kicker for Gumball Machine feed. Left Spiral magnet seen here as well. |

 | Back side of game. Back of backbox and main cabinet have been repainted and hardware restored and reinstalled. |
 | Back of main cabinet. |
 | Main cabinet interior. Main speaker, transformer, and power interface box seen here.
Complete interior has been stripped of all parts and cleaned, with everything cleaned and restored before being reassembled. |
 | Main cabinet interior- front left corner. Coin box and lid are not present in this shot, but are included with the game- both brand new parts. |
 | Underside of main cabinet. Yes, even this part of the game has been restored! Probably cleaner than it was the day it left the factory. |

 | Rear side of translite. Fantastically preserved- nearly perfect. Only one tiny superficial scratch is present on the back side of the Gumball Machine globe area (see close-up). Very minor and does not penetrate the artwork, and not visible from the front side.
None of the tell-tale signs of neglect or use are present on this translite, as are commonly seen on many average used games (scuffs from insert panel latch, handling, etc.) Very well preserved translite on this classic game. |
 | Backbox interior. All circuit boards in this game are in fantastic condition with no signs of previous repair work or any signs of overheating or "hard" use- all very well-preserved.
A brand new upgraded dot-matrix display controller board has been installed in this game for added reliability and performance. Note also the remote-mount battery kit installed for the MPU board which gets the batteries off the valuable board, and helps prevent any inadvertent damage to the valuable PC board should the batteries ever go neglected and leak. |
Like all pinballs we sell, this machine also comes complete with fully functional coin door & mechanisms with all parts present and working, and game manual and schematics (wiring diagrams) for this game.
For our local customers, this game also includes delivery, setup, and a full warranty on parts and labor, at no additional charge. For out-of-town customers, we offer our Limited Warranty.
