Nylon locking ring designed to help keep caps and collars from coming loose on Bally/Midway modular pop bumper assemblies found on many games in the mid 1980s (see game listing below).
Measures approx. 1-9/16 inches outer diameter. Mounts on the outside edge of the top lip of the pop bumper body and helps prevent the 3 tabs from bending inward, which can make them lose grip on the bumper cap collar (see additional image below of parts diagram).
Not listed in most parts catalogs, nor by a Bally part number (Midway number only). Likely a second-thought part that engineers came up with during the Bally/Midway period of the mid/late 1980s to help address the problem of the newer-style caps/collars coming loose during play.
These rings worked well, but didn't completely solve the problem, and very late-production games ended up having caps secured with two #4 x 5/8 screws to the two small horizontal ledges inside the bumper body. Many aftermarket reproduction Bally/Midway bumper caps are now made with screw holes to accommodate the screw-mounting method.
